Identity theft mess: Finally seeing numbers in NY unemployment account after 8 months of fighting fraud
Been dealing with this nightmare since August when I was unfairly fired from my job. Started a new position in December, but I'm still fighting to get my rightful benefits from those 4 months. Someone filed fraudulent claims using my information, and I've been going back and forth with ny unemployment about it for what feels like forever. Had to submit all kinds of identity verification, police reports, the whole nine yards. Yesterday, an agent told me payment was finally processed and should hit my account by Friday. My online account finally changed from showing all zeros to actual payment amounts today. Has anyone been through this before? Can I actually trust that the money is coming, or is this just another false hope? Really need this backpay to cover the debts I racked up during those months.

I've been there man. When the payment info shows up like that in your account, it's usually legit. Once the amounts are posted, they're committing to paying you. It might hit your bank a day early or a day late, but you're on the home stretch now. Congrats on finally gettin thru this mess!

•Thanks for the reassurance! After all the promises and letdowns, I'm still nervous to believe it's actually happening

•Yep this happened to me last summer. Once you see numbers instead of zeros, you're golden. The $$$ will be there.

After 6 months of getting nowhere with ny unemployment, I tried a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human being instead of endless holds and hangups. Within 10 minutes of talking to the agent, my identity fraud issues were resolved and my payments were released the next day. Honestly it was the best decision I made during this whole nightmare - got my money within 48 hours! Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•100% real! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after 6 months of no income. The callback came in about 2 hours and the agent fixed everything immediately. My payments hit my account the next day.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch at all - they just handle the calling and waiting on hold so you don't have to. When an agent picks up, they transfer the call to your phone. Talking to an actual human at unemployment made ALL the difference in my case.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? been fighting with the system for 3 months now

•Worked for me! Had my identity theft issue resolved in one call after months of getting nowhere. The unemployment office actually takes identity fraud cases seriously when you can talk to a real person.

Yep this looks like what happened to me! Once u see the dollar amounts show up that means itz being processed in the system. Should actually arrive when they said, maybe even a day early depending on ur bank. The waiting is the WORST but ur almost there!

The ID theft stuff is no joke. Took me 5 months to get my case resolved last year with ny unemployment. What a disaster!!! Did you ever get any explanation for how the fraud happened in the first place? They never gave me any details about mine.

Anna Kerber
•Nope, they just kept saying 'we have to verify your identity' over and over but never explained how someone accessed my info. Really frustrating.

•My cousin works in cyber security and says unemployment systems have been major targets since 2020. Data breaches everywhere.

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of those numbers right now. And keep checking your claim every day. NY unemployment systems are notorious for glitching out and showing payments that later disappear. Not trying to scare you but I've seen this happen to people. Also make sure your direct deposit info is 100% correct.

•Thanks for the tip! Just took screenshots of everything. Double checked my bank info too. Fingers crossed 🤞

How did you finally get the identity theft issue resolved? I'm dealing with the same thing right now and it's a complete nightmare. Been locked out of my account for 3 months and can't get anyone on the phone!!!

•I filed a police report first, then kept calling unemployment every single day. Eventually got someone who knew what they were doing and they sent me to a special ID theft unit.

•Check out claimyr.com - it got me past the phone nightmare when I had identity theft problems with my claim.

•Thanks! I'll try both approaches. This whole situation is making me crazy.

The same exact thing happened to me last year!! Once you see the payment amounts listed like that, the money is definitely coming. It's literally the final step before disbursement. My backpay hit 2 days after seeing those numbers appear.

I've worked on fraud cases for years and identity theft with unemployment is one of the WORST nightmares to untangle. The fact that you're seeing payment amounts now means you've cleared all the fraud verification hurdles. That's a huge accomplishment! For anyone else dealing with similar issues, here's what works: - File a police report immediately (most people skip this step) - Contact all three credit bureaus and place fraud alerts - Document EVERY communication with the unemployment office - Request written confirmation of your identity verification - If you can't reach anyone by phone after multiple attempts, use claimyr.com to get through The backlog of fraud cases is still massive, so getting a real person on the phone makes all the difference. Identity theft cases require manual review by special units - they CAN'T be resolved through automated systems. Glad to see you finally got resolution, OP!

•Thank you for this detailed info! I did file the police report but didn't think to contact credit bureaus. Will do that today just to be safe.

Congrats on finally getting somewhere! I was in the same boat last year - took 9 damn months to get my backpay after someone filed a false claim with my SSN. I know that feeling when u see actual $ amounts instead of zeros... I literally cried when I saw mine change. The money should definitely hit ur account when they said.

•9 months?? That's insane! But glad you eventually got your money. This whole experience has been so stressful.

•TELL ME ABOUT IT 🤯 I almost lost my apartment waiting for that backpay. The system is completely broken.

Are you sure they resolved the fraud part completely? When my account was hacked, they released some payments but then froze everything again a week later for "additional verification." Just want you to be prepared in case that happens.

Anna Kerber
•Oh no, that sounds awful! The agent specifically said the fraud investigation was closed and my identity was fully verified, but who knows if that's actually true.

•This happened to my roommate too. They should give you a case number specifically for the fraud resolution. Did they do that?

Anna Kerber
•Yes, they did give me a separate case number for the fraud issue. Hopefully that means it's actually resolved.

LOL welcome to the "I finally beat the NY unemployment system" club! 🏆 We should all get t-shirts made. The fact that your account is showing payment amounts is definitely good news. The money is real and it's coming!

Anna Kerber
•Haha I'd definitely wear that t-shirt! 😂 This has been such a long battle.

•I'd buy that shirt in a heartbeat! Mine would say "I survived 7 months of unemployment hell and all I got was this lousy t-shirt (and eventually my money)" 🤣

just wondering - what exactly did you have to submit to prove your identity? my husband is dealing with this now and they keep asking for more and more documents which is driving us CRAZY
0 coins
Anna Kerber
•They asked for: 1) driver's license 2) social security card 3) birth certificate 4) two utility bills 5) police report about the fraud 6) signed affidavit. It was ridiculous how much they wanted!

Talia Klein
•omg thats so many things!!! they only asked for 3 docs so far but sounds like more are coming 😫

•Try to send everything at once rather than waiting for them to ask for each document. Makes the process go faster. I recommend using claimyr.com to talk directly with a verification specialist.

The real question is WHY does it take them 7-8 months to resolve these identity theft cases?? The whole system is completely broken. Glad you're finally seeing progress but it's ridiculous you had to wait this long.

•PREACH!!! 🙌 The unemployment office is still operating like it's 1995.

•For real! And meanwhile people are losing their homes and going into debt waiting for money they're entitled to. It's a disgrace.

I had almost the exact situation last fall. Once it changed from zeros to actual payment amounts, the money showed up in my account the next day (was supposed to take 3 days but came early). You're good to go!

Anyone know if there's a way to PREVENT this kind of identity theft from happening again in the future? This thread is scaring me.

•Freeze your credit with all 3 bureaus, use unique passwords for everything, check your credit report regularly, and consider identity theft protection services.

Kristin Frank
•honestly even if you do all that, unemployment systems are so outdated that ur still vulnerable. but freezing ur credit is def step 1
