How long until unemployment kicks in after filing with NYS Department of Labor?

Just got laid off yesterday and filed my unemployment claim online through my.ny.gov this morning. I'm really stressed about bills and rent coming up. Does anyone know how long until unemployment kicks in and I actually start getting payments? The website says it takes time to process but doesn't give specifics. I've never been unemployed before so this is all new to me.

It typically takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment after filing if everything goes smoothly. You won't get paid for your first week (that's the waiting week), but you'll get payments for weeks 2 and 3 together once approved. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week even if you haven't heard anything yet.

Thanks! Should I be doing anything else while I wait? I'm worried I'll mess something up.

mine took 4 weeks because they had to verify my employment history, so dont panic if it takes longer than expected

The key things to do while waiting: 1) File your weekly claims religiously every week, 2) Start your job search immediately and keep detailed records, 3) Make sure your my.ny.gov account stays active. If your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, that can add several more weeks to the process.

What exactly is adjudication? I keep seeing that term but don't understand what it means.

Adjudication is when NYS Department of Labor needs to investigate something about your claim - like verifying why you were separated from your job, checking if you're eligible, or reviewing conflicting information. It's basically them doing detective work before approving benefits.

I had such a hard time getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor when my claim was delayed. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration honestly.

Is that legit? I'm nervous about using third party services for government stuff.

Yeah it's real, they just help you get through the phone system. You still talk directly to NYS Department of Labor agents, they don't handle any of your personal info or anything.

The whole system is a mess honestly. They say 2-3 weeks but I've seen people wait months because of stupid technicalities. Make sure you have all your documentation ready and pray nothing gets flagged for review.

Good luck! The waiting is the worst part but once it starts coming it's regular. Just stay on top of your weekly claims.
