How long does it take unemployment to get approved through NYS Department of Labor?

I submitted my initial unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor about 10 days ago and it's still showing as pending. My employment ended when the restaurant I worked at for 2 years had to close permanently due to lease issues. I've been checking my.ny.gov daily but there's no update on when my claim might get approved. I know I qualify since I was laid off through no fault of my own and I've been working consistently. Does anyone know the typical timeframe for NYS Department of Labor to approve a straightforward unemployment claim? I'm starting to worry something went wrong with my application.

For most regular unemployment claims, NYS Department of Labor typically processes them within 2-4 weeks if there are no complications. Since you were laid off due to business closure, that's usually a straightforward case. The delay might be due to verification of your employment history or wage records. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval - you can backdate benefits once approved.

Thanks for the info! I have been doing my weekly claims. Should I be worried that it's taking longer than usual or is 10 days still normal?

mine took 3 weeks to get approved last year and that was just for a regular layoff, no issues at all. the system is just slow sometimes

If you're having trouble getting through to check on your claim status, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helps people reach NYS Department of Labor agents directly. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I used it when my claim was stuck in adjudication and finally got answers about the delay.

How does that work exactly? I've been trying to call for days and can never get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor.

It basically handles the calling process for you so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. They connect you directly to an agent when one becomes available. Really helped me avoid the frustration of constant busy signals.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A MESS! I've been waiting 5 WEEKS for my claim and every time I call they give me a different excuse. First it was 'processing time' then it was 'verification needed' now they're saying my employer hasn't responded to some form I never heard of!

That's awful! Have you tried contacting your former employer to see if they received anything from NYS Department of Labor?
