How long does it take to get approved for unemployment in NYS - still waiting after 2 weeks
I submitted my initial unemployment application through the NYS Department of Labor website two weeks ago and I'm getting really anxious about when I'll hear back. My account shows the claim is under review but there's no timeline or anything. I lost my job at a retail store when they had to close our location permanently. I've been checking my account every day but the status hasn't changed. Does anyone know how long the approval process usually takes? I'm starting to worry I did something wrong on the application.

The initial processing time varies but typically takes 2-4 weeks for a straightforward claim. Since you mentioned the store closure was permanent, that should be considered a qualifying separation. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial determination - you can backdate payments once approved.

•Oh I didn't know I could file weekly claims already! I thought I had to wait for approval first. Should I start doing that now?

took me 3 weeks last year when i got laid off, but that was during busy season. if your employer contests it or there's any issues with your work history it can take longer

•My manager said they wouldn't contest it since it was a store closure, so hopefully that helps speed things up.

I had trouble getting through to check on my claim status when I was waiting. If you need to speak with someone at NYS Department of Labor, I used a service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really saved me from spending hours on hold.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already stressed about money while waiting for benefits.

•I found it worth it to get answers quickly rather than spending days trying to get through. The peace of mind was valuable to me.

The whole system is so slow and frustrating!! I waited almost a MONTH for my approval and then they still had issues with my payments. NYS Department of Labor really needs to get their act together.

Two weeks is still normal range. I remember being super stressed too but mine came through right at the 3 week mark. Just keep checking and definitely start those weekly certifications!
