Heard about a $3,100 payment for hospitality workers on ny unemployment but can't find details?

Anyone know anything about the $3,100 one-time payment that's supposedly coming? I heard the governor announced something for people who worked in hospitality and tourism who were on extended unemployment benefits. My daughter is back at her restaurant job but only getting about half the hours she had before the pandemic hit. She could really use this money if it's real but we can't find any solid info about it. I saw something briefly on the news but when I tried looking it up online I couldn't find anything official. Has anyone received this payment or know how to apply for it?

I heard about it too! But I think it's $3,100 not $2,750. My cousin works at a resort upstate and said they got an email about it, but no actual money yet. I think you have to have been working in tourism or restaurant industry since before covid and still be underemployed. Not sure where to apply tho.

Thanks! Do you know if your cousin had to fill out some kind of application? I've been checking the ny unemployment website every day but nothing shows up about this.

0 coins

He said he didn't apply for anything yet. Just got the email saying some relief was coming. I'll ask him for more details next time we talk.

0 coins

I think the amount is actually $3,250 based on what I read in the news last week. It's for people who were on unemployment for at least 6 months due to the pandemic.

0 coins

I'm pretty sure it's $3,100. That's what my manager told us in our meeting last week.

After weeks of trying to get info about these payments, I finally got through to someone at unemployment! I used a service called claimyr.com and got a callback with a real person in like 20 minutes. They told me everything about the program and helped me check my eligibility. Best money I've spent to finally get an answer instead of endless hold music. They even have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

0 coins

This sounds like an ad. Does this service actually work? How much did you pay?

0 coins

Definitely not an ad! I was struggling for weeks trying to get through. It worked for me - took about 25 mins to get a callback. Honestly don't remember exactly what it cost but talking to an agent solved my issues in minutes instead of days of frustration.

0 coins

Hmm idk about using a third party service... feels weird giving someone else money to reach unemployment.

0 coins

I get the hesitation but after spending like 15+ hours on hold over multiple days, it was worth it. Nothing sketchy about it - they just automate the hold process and call you when they get a human.

0 coins

wait did they actually tell you if you qualify for the payment or just general info about the program?

0 coins

They checked my specific situation and confirmed I was eligible! The rep looked up all my info and told me exactly what I needed to do next. Such a relief to finally get a straight answer.

0 coins

I've been checking everyday and haven't seen anything official from the Department of Labor about this. Lots of rumors flying around but nothing concrete on the website. Typical NY unemployment confusion 🙄

Same here! I've been checking my account daily and nothing. Someone in my building said theyd already gotten it but I think they're confusing it with something else.

They probs are confused. I think this is still in the planning stages and hasn't actually rolled out yet. The government loves to announce things before they're ready 🤦‍♀️

Ok so I work for a hotel (front desk) and our HR sent out an email yesterday about this! It IS real but the actual amount is $3,100 and it's specifically for hospitality and tourism workers who were on unemployment for at least 18 weeks during the pandemic AND who are still working reduced hours (less than 75% of pre-pandemic hours). They said applications aren't open yet but should be available through the NY DOL website by next month. Hope this helps!

0 coins

Thank you so much! This is exactly the info I was looking for. Does your HR have any more details about how to apply when it opens?

0 coins

They just said to keep an eye on the DOL website. Supposedly there will be a special application section added specifically for this program. You'll need proof of your pre-pandemic hours vs current hours.

0 coins

Do you know if this applies to people who completely lost their tourism jobs and haven't been able to return at all? Or only people who returned with reduced hours?

0 coins

From what our HR said, it applies to both scenarios - completely unemployed or underemployed tourism/hospitality workers. But you had to have been employed in the industry before March 2020.

0 coins

I'm in the industry & I spoke directly with a DOL rep last week (after trying for days to get thru). This payment is real but there's a TON of misinformation going around. Here's what they told me: - It's a one-time payment of $3,100 - You must have worked in hospitality/tourism before the pandemic - You must have been on unemployment for at least 17 weeks total - Your current hours must be at least 30% less than pre-pandemic - Applications will open June 15th - The money comes from leftover federal relief funds They're apparently going to send emails to everyone who potentially qualifies. The application will require proof of employment in the tourism/hospitality sector and documentation of your reduced hours. If you're struggling to get info by phone (who isn't?), try claimyr.com - it's how I finally got through after days of trying. They keep calling for you and get you connected with a real agent who can actually help.

0 coins

This is super helpful, thanks! I've been trying to call them for days with no luck.

0 coins

I heard it was only for restaurant workers, not hotels? Is that wrong?

0 coins

No, it definitely includes hotels, theme parks, resorts, tour guides, etc. Pretty much any tourism-adjacent job qualifies as long as you meet the other criteria.

0 coins

Whats this claimyr site? Has anyone else used it successfully? Seems sus.

0 coins

It's just a service that does the calling/holding for you. After trying to get through for 3 days straight I was desperate. They call and wait on hold, then call you when they actually reach a human. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

I don't mean to be negative, but I'll believe it when I see the money in my account. 😑 NY unemployment has promised so many things over the past couple years that either never materialized or got so delayed they were useless. I work at a museum and we're all still struggling with reduced hours but getting actual help has been a nightmare.

0 coins

just got off the phone with unemployment (finally!!). the program is called the Hospitality Worker Recovery Payment (HWRP) and yes it's $3,100. eligibility requires that you worked in tourism/hospitality before the pandemic, were on unemployment for at least 20 weeks total during the pandemic emergency period, and are currently working at least 25% fewer hours than before. they're finalizing the application process and it should launch mid-June. there's no way to pre-register or anything, just gotta wait.

0 coins

How did you manage to get through to them? I've been calling for weeks with no luck 😫

0 coins

honestly it was pure luck. called right when they opened at 8am and somehow only had to wait 45 minutes instead of the usual forever 😅

0 coins

Gonna try this tomorrow morning thx for the tip!

There was an official press release about this last week. It's called the Tourism Worker Recovery Fund. $3,100 one-time payments for eligible workers. Here's what I found: "The state has allocated $100 million for workers in the hospitality and tourism sectors who continue to experience reduced employment compared to pre-pandemic levels." Applications should open next month sometime.

0 coins

Do you have a link to the press release? I can't find it anywhere!

0 coins

I saw it on the governor's website but now I can't find it either! 🤔 Weird. Maybe they took it down to revise the details?

my sister works at a hotel and her manager just did a meeting about this. apparently its coming from the american rescue plan leftover funds that the state had to use or lose. she said they were told applications would be on the ny unemployment website starting in june.

0 coins

How are y'all STILL dealing with unemployment issues?! I thought all that pandemic stuff was over? Genuine question.

0 coins

It's not about still being on unemployment. It's about tourism/hospitality workers who haven't gotten back to full hours yet. Many hotels, restaurants, etc are still not back to pre-pandemic business levels.

0 coins

Ohhhh that makes more sense. Thanks for explaining!

0 coins

I actually got an email about this last week! I worked at a hotel before covid, was on unemployment for almost a year, and now I'm back but only part-time. The email didn't have many details, just said that the NY Tourism Recovery Payment Program would be launching soon and that I might qualify based on my unemployment history. Said to watch for more info in the coming weeks.

0 coins

Was the email from the official unemployment email address? Or could it be a scam?

0 coins

Definitely from the official ny.gov email. I checked the header and everything - I'm super paranoid about scams these days!

0 coins

Calling NY unemployment is IMPOSSIBLE. I spent 3 days trying to get someone on the phone about this. Finally used claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in like 30 min. They confirmed all the details everyone else mentioned - one-time $3,100 payment, must have been in tourism/hospitality, must have been on UI during pandemic, must still be working reduced hours. Applications open in June.

0 coins

is claimyr worth it? im skeptical of paying for something that should be free...

0 coins

I used it last year when I had a problem with my claim. TBH it was the only way I ever got through to an actual person. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

Yes 100%. After being hung up on 4 times and spending hours on hold over multiple days, it was SO worth it. They got me connected to a real person who actually helped solve my issue.

0 coins

This is real. My roommate works at the NYSDOL (not customer service but in another dept) and she confirmed they're launching this program next month. It's specifically to help tourism workers who still haven't recovered financially from the pandemic. The payment is $3,100 and there are specific eligibility requirements about how long you were on unemployment and your current work status compared to before.

0 coins

Why is it so hard to get clear information from ny unemployment??? It's almost like they make it confusing on purpose so fewer people apply 🙄

0 coins

Truth. Their whole system is designed to be as frustrating as possible.

0 coins

fr every time there's a new program it's the same confusing mess. and good luck calling them for clarification 🤡

Wait I'm confused. Is this only for people still on unemployment? Or can people who are back working but at reduced hours also qualify? My husband works at a museum and they cut his schedule from 40 hrs to 25 hrs compared to pre-covid.

0 coins

From what everyone is saying, it sounds like he would qualify! It's specifically for tourism workers who are still at reduced hours compared to before the pandemic.

0 coins

It's for ppl who WERE on unemployment during the pandemic but are now working reduced hours.

I FINALLY managed to get thru to someone at unemployment today after trying all week. Here's the OFFICIAL info straight from them: The program is called the "Hospitality and Tourism Recovery Payment" and is a one-time payment of $3,100 (gross, before taxes). Eligibility requirements: - Worked in hospitality or tourism sector before March 2020 - Received at least 16 weeks of unemployment benefits during the pandemic - Currently employed but working at least 25% fewer hours OR earning at least 25% less than pre-pandemic Applications will open June 15th and close August 15th. Payments expected to start going out in July for early applicants. You'll need to provide proof of employment in the sector (paystubs from before March 2020) and current employment status (recent paystubs). They're sending emails to people who they think might qualify based on their records, but not everyone will get an email so check the website in June! By the way, I highly recommend using claimyr.com to get through to an agent. After days of trying on my own with no luck, they got me connected to a real person in about 40 minutes. Definitely worth it to finally get solid answers.

omg thank you for this detailed info!! 🙏

This should be the top comment. Thanks for the clear explanation.

Did they say anything about people who changed jobs? I used to work at a hotel but now I'm in retail (making way less). Would I still qualify?

0 coins

They said as long as you were in hospitality/tourism before the pandemic and on unemployment during it, your current job doesn't matter as long as you're making less than before.

0 coins

I bet this will be like everything else with ny unemployment - announced with big fanfare, implemented horribly, and half the people who qualify will never see a penny 😒

0 coins

Sad but true. Remember when they announced that $600 extension and it took 3 months to actually start paying it?

0 coins

Facts. Their systems are from the stone age, wouldn't be surprised if they're using Windows 95 still 💀

0 coins

i work at a restaurant and our manager just told us about this today! it's definitely real but they're still setting up the application process. he said we should all start gathering our pre-pandemic pay stubs to show our hours/wages from before vs now.

0 coins

I keep seeing different amounts. First I heard $2,500, then $2,750, now people are saying $3,100. Which is it?!

0 coins

It's $3,100. That's the number that was in the official announcement.

0 coins

Drake

It was originally announced as $2,750 but they increased it to $3,100 in the final approval.
