Got DocuSign email asking for SS number - is this legit NY unemployment or a scam?

I just received an email supposedly from DocuSign that says it's regarding my NY unemployment claim. It's asking for my Social Security number and other personal info. I'm super nervous about putting that kind of sensitive information online - seems like it could be a phishing scam? But what if it's actually from NYSDOL and I need to respond? Has anyone else gotten these emails? How can I tell if it's legitimate or not?

🚩 RED FLAG! NY unemployment does use DocuSign for some documents, but they NEVER ask for your full social security number through email. This is almost certainly a phishing attempt. The real NYSDOL already has your SSN from your initial application, so they don't need to ask for it again this way. If you're unsure about any communication claiming to be from unemployment, always log directly into your NY.gov account through the official website (not through any links in the email) and check your messages there. Any legitimate documents will appear in your secure inbox.

Thank you!!! I was about to fill it out because I'm worried about my benefits getting delayed. So glad I asked here first.

I got something like that last month!! I almost filled it out too but something felt off about it. When I called the NYSDOL (took FOREVER to get through) they confirmed it was a scam. They said they've been seeing a lot of these lately. Be super careful - these scammers are getting really sophisticated with their fake emails and websites.

The email address looked weird when I checked carefully - it was something like nys-docusign@unemployment-support.com instead of a real .gov address. Plus they misspelled 'department' in one place. Small things but made me suspicious enough to call and check!

If you need to verify if communications are legitimate, I'd recommend trying to reach a NY unemployment agent directly. I was dealing with something similar a few months ago and spent days trying to get through on the phone. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me connect with an agent in about 25 minutes instead of waiting for hours or days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I got through, the agent confirmed all legitimate DocuSign requests would be preceded by an official notification in my NY.gov account messages, and they would never ask for my full SSN via email.

Thanks, I might try that service if I need to talk to someone. I'm still confused why these scammers keep targeting unemployment claimants specifically.

Scammers target unemployment claimants because they know people are anxious about their benefits and more likely to respond quickly without thinking. They also know the real NYSDOL is hard to reach for verification, which plays into their hands.

THESE SCAMS ARE EVERYWHERE RIGHT NOW!!! I've gotten THREE different fake emails in the past month alone. One DocuSign, one pretending to be a "verification" email, and another claiming I needed to "reactivate" my account. They're getting better at making them look real too. NYSDOL even put out a warning about this on their website. They will NEVER ask for your full SSN, bank info, or passwords through email or text. NEVER EVER CLICK THE LINKS in these emails!!!!

That's horrible! These people should go to JAIL for targeting people already struggling. It makes me so ANGRY!

Here's how to identify legitimate NYSDOL communications: 1. Official emails come from addresses ending in @labor.ny.gov 2. They will never ask for your full SSN via email (they may ask for the last 4 digits for verification) 3. Legitimate DocuSign requests will always be referenced in your secure NY.gov message inbox first 4. When in doubt, log in directly to your NY.gov account through the official website 5. Report suspicious emails to NYSDOL at: dol.sm.phishing@labor.ny.gov Stay safe everyone!

Thanks for this list! I've saved it to check against any emails I get. The scammers are getting so good at making these look legit.

i got a docusign thing 2 weeks ago but mine was real. the difference was i got a message in my actual ny.gov account first saying to expect it, and it only asked for last 4 of ssn not the whole thing. and the email came from a .ny.gov address. check those things

That's really helpful to know there are real ones too. I'll check my NY.gov account to see if there's anything about this there.

Always forward suspicious emails to the official NYSDOL phishing email: dol.sm.phishing@labor.ny.gov They track these scams and it helps them warn others. I've gotten at least 5 different scam attempts this year alone. They're getting really sophisticated! Also you should freeze your credit reports if you're worried about identity theft. It's free and gives peace of mind.

I'll definitely forward the email to that address. And good point about freezing credit reports - I hadn't thought of that!

My friend works for unemployment and says they're seeing TONS of these scams especially targeting people on unemployment. The real forms only ask for last 4 of SSN if anything. Never give your full number!

It's so frustrating that they target people already going through hard times. Thanks for confirming this is likely a scam.

As an update for everyone, the official NYSDOL posted about this exact scam on their social media last week. They confirmed they NEVER initiate requests for personal information via DocuSign emails without first notifying you through your secure NY.gov account. Always log directly into your account through https://unemployment.labor.ny.gov (type it directly in your browser) to check for legitimate communications.
