Got weird email about NY unemployment tourism recovery funds Docusign - is this legitimate?

I just got this strange email claiming my Docusign for 'tourism recovery funds' has been received and completed. I never applied for anything tourism related with my NY unemployment claim. Is this some kind of scam targeting unemployment claimants? Has anyone else received something similar? I'm worried someone might be using my information fraudulently or that my account has been compromised somehow.

That sounds suspicious. I got something similar last week and immediately called NYSDOL. The rep confirmed it's NOT legitimate - they don't have any 'tourism recovery funds' program connected to regular unemployment benefits right now. Definitely don't click any links or provide any information if they follow up! When I couldn't get through on the regular unemployment line, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach an agent quickly. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. The agent marked my account with a fraud alert just to be safe.

Thank you! I'll definitely call to report this. Did you have to do anything else besides reporting it? I'm freaking out a bit wondering if someone has accessed my account.

This is definitely suspicious. The NYSDOL has been warning about an increase in phishing attempts targeting unemployment claimants in 2025. What these scammers typically do is send emails that look official, hoping you'll click links that either steal your login credentials or download malware. The best approach is to never click links in unexpected emails, always go directly to the official NY.gov website by typing the address yourself. If you're concerned about your account security, I'd recommend calling to have your password reset.

You should change your NY.gov ID password immediately, and any other accounts where you might use the same password. Even just clicking a link can sometimes install tracking cookies or malware. I'd recommend running a virus scan on your device right away. Also, keep an eye on your unemployment payment history for any unexpected changes.

There's no tourism recovery program for NY unemployment right now. My cousin works for the state and says they've seen a huge spike in these phishing attempts. They're getting better at making them look official too.

It's not just tourism scams either. I've been getting emails about supposed 'additional benefits' and 'special pandemic extensions' that don't even exist anymore. The NYSDOL needs to do a better job protecting our information! Every time I try calling to report these, I'm on hold for HOURS. It's like they don't even care that scammers are targeting their claimants. This system is completely broken.

Report this to the NYSDOL immediately at 1-888-598-2077. This is part of a known phishing campaign. They're specifically targeting unemployment claimants with various fake fund notifications (tourism recovery, business relief, pandemic extensions, etc.). The real NYSDOL will never send you Docusign documents out of the blue without you initiating an application process first. Also report it to the NY Attorney General's office at https://ag.ny.gov/consumer-frauds/Filing-a-Consumer-Complaint

Thanks for the specific numbers and guidance. I'll call them first thing tomorrow morning and report to the AG's office too. Should I also file a police report, or is notifying these agencies sufficient?

Notifying NYSDOL and the AG is sufficient for now. The police typically won't take action on phishing attempts unless you've suffered financial losses. Just make sure you don't click any links in the email or respond to it. Delete it from your inbox.

anyone else notice these scams always happen right after u certify for benefits?? makes me think theres a leak somewhere in the system

You're right! I got mine the day after certification too. I wonder if they're somehow monitoring the certification schedule or if there's actually some kind of data breach we don't know about yet.

For everyone's awareness, here's what to do if you receive suspicious emails claiming to be from NYSDOL: 1. Don't click any links or download attachments 2. Forward the email to phishing@labor.ny.gov 3. Report it to the NYSDOL fraud department at 1-888-598-2077 4. Change your NY.gov ID password if you clicked any links 5. Enable two-factor authentication on your NY.gov account 6. Monitor your payment history for unauthorized changes The genuine NYSDOL will always communicate through your secure message center in your online account, not primarily through email. When they do send emails, they direct you to log in through the official site rather than clicking email links.

This is super helpful, thank you! I just forwarded the email to that phishing address. I didn't realize they had a specific email for reporting these scams.

I HATE these scammers!! My brother almost fell for a similar scam last month - they told him he qualified for some special 'job training fund' that required his banking info to 'deposit the benefit.' He was desperate and almost sent them everything before I stopped him. The unemployment system is ALREADY confusing enough without these vultures making it worse. And of course when you call the actual unemployment office to verify, you can never get through!!

Glad your brother didn't fall for it! My neighbor wasn't so lucky - gave their SSN and banking info to what they thought was the unemployment office. Had their identity stolen and took months to sort out.

Update: I finally got through to a representative at NYSDOL this morning. They confirmed this is absolutely a scam - there is no tourism recovery program connected to unemployment benefits. They placed a note on my account about the phishing attempt and suggested I monitor my credit report for the next few months just as a precaution. Thanks everyone for your help!
