Finally got my ny unemployment application accepted - how long until I see my benefit amount?
Just finished my unemployment application last week after losing my job in April due to downsizing. The whole process was so confusing and took me three tries because the website kept crashing mid-application! Today I checked my account and it says my claim has been accepted, which is a huge relief. But now I'm wondering how long it takes before they tell me how much I'll actually receive? The status just says 'claim accepted' but doesn't show any payment amount or schedule. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long did you wait after acceptance to find out your weekly benefit amount? I'm trying to budget for May and really need to know what to expect.

Congrats on getting accepted! For me it took about 4-5 days after acceptance to see my benefit amount. They should send you a monetary determination letter that breaks down how much you'll get. You'll probably get an email when it's ready to view in your account. Just keep checking your online portal daily.

•Thank you! 4-5 days isn't too bad. Did you get backpay for the waiting period too?

•Yeah I got paid for all weeks except the waiting week. First payment came about 8 days after I saw my benefit amount.

After banging my head against the wall for weeks trying to reach anyone at ny unemployment, I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically called for me, stayed on hold, and then connected me with an actual human when someone picked up. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked within days - best decision I made during this whole mess. They even have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds like an ad. Does this actually work or what? I've been trying to call for 2 weeks straight.

•Not an ad lol, just sharing what worked for me after wasting HOURS on hold. My claim was stuck in pending for almost a month before I tried it. The agent I spoke to fixed everything in like 10 minutes.

•wait does this really work? I'm desperate at this point and ready to try anything 😩

•It worked for me! They basically just do the waiting on hold part for you, then call you when they get a real person. Saved me from losing my mind with that awful hold music lol

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•The catch is they charge for the service, but when you're about to get evicted and need your benefits ASAP it's worth every penny. You can keep calling yourself if you want tho 🤷♀️

I just went through this whole process and got accepted last month. It took exactly 7 days after acceptance to see my benefit amount in the system. They should send you an email when the determination letter is ready to view online. Mine came on a Tuesday. Just be patient and don't freak out if it takes a bit longer. The system is overloaded right now.

The timeline varies a lot depending on how complicated your work history is. For me it took 8 days, but my friend who had multiple employers got hers in just 3 days. I think they might prioritize certain cases. If you don't see anything after 10 business days, CALL THEM. Don't just wait forever.

•Calling is a complete joke tho. I tried for TWO WEEKS straight and couldn't get through. The system is broken af.

•I had success using claimyr.com to get through to a rep when I couldn't get through on my own. Was skeptical but it actually worked.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but 'accepted' doesn't always mean you'll get paid right away. Mine was 'accepted' then stuck in pending for 6 weeks because they needed to 'verify my identity' even though I uploaded all the documents they asked for. NY unemployment is a total mess rn.

•Oh no, that's not what I wanted to hear 😭 Did you eventually get it sorted out?

•Yeah but only after I finally got someone on the phone. Had to call like 50 times. Once I talked to a person they fixed it in 5 minutes and I got backpay for all the weeks.

•That sounds awful. I'll try calling if I don't see anything in a week.

Here's the COMPLETE breakdown of what to expect (I work in HR and help former employees navigate this all the time): 1. Acceptance means your claim is valid, but they still need to calculate your benefit amount based on your previous earnings 2. You'll receive a Monetary Determination letter in your online account within 5-10 business days (check your dashboard daily) 3. This letter will show your weekly benefit amount (WBA) and your total benefit entitlement 4. After that, you'll need to certify weekly to receive payments 5. First payment typically comes 2-3 weeks after initial acceptance IF there are no issues If nothing happens after 10 days, you NEED to talk to someone. Regular phone lines are nearly impossible, but services like claimyr.com can get you through to an agent. Several of my former employees used it when their claims got stuck. The most common delay at your stage is identity verification issues or employer response delays. Don't panic, but stay proactive!

•This is super helpful, thank you so much! Will the monetary determination also show the date of my first payment?

•No problem! The Monetary Determination won't show payment dates - it just shows how much you'll receive weekly and in total. Once you start certifying weekly, payments should come 2-3 business days after each certification if everything's in order.

Watch out for the ID verification step. That's where mine got stuck for WEEKS. Even after acceptance, they randomly flagged me for extra verification and I had to upload my documents again. The system is a complete joke.

•Try claimyr.com - it's the only way I finally got through after weeks of trying. They wait on hold so you don't have to.

Am I the only one who thinks the whole NY unemployment system needs to be completely rebuilt from scratch? It's 2023 and they're still using technology from like 2005. This is our tax dollars at work folks! 🤡

•PREACH 👏 I work in software development and their system is an embarrassment. It's like they intentionally made it difficult to use.

•For real. And don't even get me started on their "phone system" that just hangs up on you when they're "too busy" instead of offering a callback option.

•Ever wonder if they make it confusing on purpose so fewer people get benefits? Just saying...

•I've thought the same thing! It's like they WANT people to give up.

Make sure you certify every week even while waiting! This is important. You can backdate certifications up to a point, but it's easier if you just do them weekly as required. Don't miss this or you might lose money.

•Good point! I've been certifying each week even though I haven't received any money yet.

•Perfect! You're doing it right then. So many people miss that step and then wonder why they're not getting paid.

Just an FYI - the system is having major delays because of the tech layoffs affecting NY lately. My benefit amount took 12 days to show up and I applied in March. Hang in there!

Look at your previous paystubs and calculate it yourself. NY gives you about 50% of your average weekly wage (up to the maximum). You can figure it out pretty closely while waiting for the official amount.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll try to calculate it myself in the meantime.

ok no joke every1 in my friend group who got laid off recently had their claims stuck at some point. the ONLY way to get it fixed is to talk to a human. i was lucky and got thru after 2 days of calling but my roommate used claimyr.com and said it worked great.

Hey Keisha! I went through the exact same thing last month - that "accepted" status had me refreshing my account like crazy! In my case, it took about 6 days after acceptance to see my actual benefit amount show up. They'll post a "Monetary Determination" letter in your online account that breaks down your weekly benefit amount and total benefits available. You should get an email notification when it's ready to view. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking when you're trying to budget, but it sounds like you're on the right track. Just keep certifying weekly in the meantime and checking your account daily. Fingers crossed yours comes through quickly! 🤞

•Thanks Chloe! That's really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this. 6 days sounds reasonable - I'm on day 3 now so hopefully soon! Did you get your first payment pretty quickly after the monetary determination showed up? And yeah, I've been obsessively checking my account multiple times a day 😅
