Does unemployment email you - NYS Department of Labor communication methods?
I'm wondering about how NYS Department of Labor communicates with claimants. Do they send emails for important updates about your claim status? I filed my initial claim two weeks ago and haven't received any email notifications, just checking my account on my.ny.gov every day. Should I be expecting emails about adjudication updates or weekly claim reminders? Want to make sure I'm not missing anything important.

NYS Department of Labor primarily uses their online messaging system through your my.ny.gov account rather than email. You'll get notifications in your inbox on the website when there are updates to your claim status, adjudication decisions, or if they need additional information. Make sure to check your account regularly since important deadlines can be communicated this way.

•Thanks! I've been checking daily but wasn't sure if I should also expect regular emails. Good to know it's mainly through the website messaging.

they dont really email much, mostly just the online messages like the other person said. sometimes you might get an email if theres a big system update or something but not for regular claim stuff

I had issues getting through to NYS Department of Labor when my claim was stuck in adjudication for weeks with no updates in my online account. Eventually used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach an agent by phone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really helpful when you need to talk to someone directly about your claim status.

•How does that work exactly? I've been trying to call for days and can never get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor.

•It basically helps you navigate through the phone system and connects you with an actual agent. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

Just make sure you're checking both your messages AND your claim status regularly. Sometimes important updates show up in different sections of the my.ny.gov site. I almost missed a request for additional job search documentation because it wasn't clearly marked as urgent.

ugh the whole communication system is so confusing!! why cant they just send normal emails like every other organization in 2025?? having to log into that website constantly is such a pain

•I feel you on that! But I guess they want everything centralized in one place for security reasons or something.

You can also set up text notifications through your my.ny.gov account settings - I found this really helpful since I don't always remember to check the website daily. Go to your profile settings and look for notification preferences. It won't replace checking your online messages but at least you'll get a heads up when something new is posted to your account.

•Oh wow, I had no idea you could set up text notifications! That's super helpful - I've been worried about missing something important. Going to set that up right now, thanks for the tip!

Just wanted to add that while they don't send regular emails, you might get one if there's an issue with your weekly certification or if your claim gets flagged for review. I got an email once when I missed my weekly filing deadline - it was pretty generic but did direct me to log into my account to resolve the issue. The key thing is definitely checking your online messages frequently since that's where all the real communication happens.
