Can I withdraw my unemployment claim and start over with NYS Department of Labor?
I think I messed up when I first filed my unemployment claim last month. I answered some questions wrong about my work history and now I'm worried it's going to cause problems. My claim is still pending and I haven't gotten any payments yet. Is there a way to withdraw my current claim and file a completely new one with the correct information? Or should I just try to fix what I already submitted? I'm really stressed about this because I need the benefits but don't want to get in trouble for providing wrong info initially.

You can't really 'withdraw' a claim once it's submitted to NYS Department of Labor, but you absolutely can correct mistakes. The best approach is to call them and explain the errors you made. They deal with this all the time and would rather you fix it now than discover discrepancies later during adjudication. What kind of work history information did you get wrong?

•I think I put the wrong dates for when I left my last job and maybe understated my wages from a part-time job I had. Should I call the main number or is there a specific corrections line?

honestly i tried calling nysdol like 50 times last week and could never get through, the system just hangs up on you after being on hold forever

•I had the same problem trying to reach NYS Department of Labor about my adjudication issue. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Used it last week and finally got to talk to someone about fixing my claim details.

DO NOT try to file a second claim! That will create a huge mess in their system and could be considered fraud. The NYS Department of Labor computers will flag duplicate claims and you'll end up with even bigger problems. Just correct the original claim through proper channels.

•This happened to my brother - he filed twice by mistake and it took months to sort out. NYS Department of Labor made him verify everything multiple times and held up his payments for weeks.

What you want to do is log into your my.ny.gov account and look for any pending questionnaires or requests for additional information. Sometimes they'll send you forms to clarify employment details if something looks off. If there's nothing there, you can also send a secure message through the system explaining the corrections needed.

•I checked my account but don't see any questionnaires yet. Should I wait for them to contact me or be proactive about fixing the mistakes?

•Be proactive! It's much better to correct errors before they become issues during adjudication. You can send a message explaining exactly what information was wrong and what the correct details should be.

ugh the whole unemployment system is such a nightmare, why can't they just make it easier to fix simple mistakes without having to jump through hoops

I went through something similar when I first filed my claim. Don't panic - mistakes happen and the system is designed to handle corrections. Here's what worked for me: first, document exactly what information you got wrong and what the correct details should be. Then try the secure messaging system through my.ny.gov first - it's often faster than calling. If you don't get a response within a week, then try calling early in the morning (like 8 AM) when the phone lines are less busy. Whatever you do, don't file a second claim - that will definitely cause more problems than it solves. The key is being honest and proactive about the corrections.

•This is really helpful advice! I'm curious about the secure messaging - when you sent your correction through my.ny.gov, did you have to provide any documentation to back up the correct information? Like pay stubs or employment verification? I want to make sure I have everything ready before I submit the correction.
