Can I get NYDOL unemployment benefits during a ULP strike?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I'm currently on strike and wondering if I can get unemployment benefits. It's a ULP strike (Unfair Labor Practice) if that makes any difference. Anyone have experience with this or know how it works in our state? I'm trying to figure out if I should even bother applying or if I'm just wasting my time. Any advice would be appreciated!

Oof, strikes and unemployment benefits are tricky. Generally, you can't get unemployment while on strike, but ULP strikes might be different. Have you tried calling the unemployment office? They should be able to give you a definitive answer.

•Pro tip: call right when they open. You might have better luck getting through.

I was in a similar situation last year. Here's what I learned: • Regular strikes usually don't qualify for unemployment • ULP strikes are different - you might be eligible • You need to prove it's a ULP strike • Document everything - dates, reasons, any communication from your union • Be prepared for a longer process • Some states have special rules for ULP strikes My advice? Apply anyway. Worst case, they say no. Best case, you get the benefits. Good luck!

•Seriously! It's like they don't want us to get help. So frustrating 😤

•I found a way to get through! There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Have you talked to your union rep? They should have info on how ULP strikes affect unemployment benefits. Don't go it alone!

idk about unemployment, but have you considered picking up some gig work while on strike? Might help tide you over until this is resolved.

•That's not a bad idea. Might have to look into that if this drags on. Thanks!

This whole system is rigged against workers. We strike for our rights and they cut us off from benefits. It's time for a complete overhaul!
