The whole system is backwards if you ask me. Employers can fire you for anything and then fight your unemployment claim to keep their tax rates low. It's all about money for them.
To clarify the employer payment question: NY employers pay unemployment insurance taxes based on their payroll and experience rating. These taxes fund the UI system, but individual claims don't directly cost the employer dollar-for-dollar. However, too many successful claims can raise their future tax rates, which is why some employers contest claims they believe are unwarranted.
I had trouble reaching Florida unemployment by phone when I needed help with my interstate claim. If you run into the same issue, there's a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made the whole process much easier than spending hours on hold.
ugh the NYS Department of Labor makes this so confusing!! why cant they just say if you worked X hours you qualify instead of all this quarterly wage stuff
I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about my eligibility too. The phone lines are always busy and the website wasn't super clear. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent who could look up my wage history and tell me if I qualified. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made the whole process way easier than trying to call myself.
Just to add - even if you missed filing when you first became unemployed, you might still be able to file a late claim depending on when exactly you were laid off. NYS Department of Labor sometimes allows backdating in certain situations. The worst they can say is no, so it might be worth looking into if you think you qualified.
The whole system is rigged anyway. They raise wages to look good politically then small businesses can't afford to keep everyone. Meanwhile big corporations just automate more jobs. Been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months trying to get my claim processed while watching more automation replace workers everywhere.
That sounds frustrating with your claim processing. Have you tried calling the NYS Department of Labor directly? I know the phone lines are always busy but sometimes you can get through early in the morning.
Actually had luck with a service called Claimyr when I couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor myself. They basically call for you and get you connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me weeks of trying to get through on my own.
I think this is just coincidence honestly. My cousin works in labor economics and says the job market has way more factors than just minimum wage. Supply chains, technology changes, consumer spending patterns all matter more. Focus on your unemployment benefits and job search rather than trying to figure out macro economics.

I had a nightmare trying to get through to someone at NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about my claim. Their phone lines are always busy and the callback system barely works. If you need to talk to an actual person about your eligibility, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to our own state agency.

•I felt the same way but honestly it was worth it to get my questions answered quickly instead of spending days trying to get through. The peace of mind was valuable to me.

The whole system is broken honestly. They make it so hard to figure out if you qualify and then even harder to actually get benefits. I've been waiting 3 weeks for my claim to get out of adjudication and no one can tell me why it's taking so long.

•Adjudication? What does that mean? Is that something I should be worried about when I file?

•Adjudication just means they're reviewing your claim to verify eligibility. It's pretty common, especially for first-time filers. It can take a few weeks but don't panic if your claim goes into adjudication status.
