Just a heads up - if your employer fights the claim and says you were fired for cause, you might have to go through an adjudication process. Could take weeks to resolve. Document everything about why you think the firing was unfair.
Just remember the golden rule - ALWAYS report your work and wages accurately. NYS Department of Labor will cross-reference with employer wage reports and if they find unreported income, you'll face overpayment penalties and possible fraud charges. Better to be honest and get reduced benefits than to risk the consequences.
The whole system is so confusing!! Why can't they just make it simple - work = no benefits, no work = benefits. All these partial payment calculations and reporting requirements are giving me anxiety.
If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to clarify your situation, I had success using a service called Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help you get through to an actual agent instead of being stuck in phone queue hell. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helped me get answers about my disqualification appeal.
wait i thought we paid into unemployment insurance too?? my pay stub has all kinds of deductions and i assumed some went to unemployment stuff. this is confusing
You're probably thinking of SDI (State Disability Insurance) which does come out of employee paychecks in some states, but NY doesn't have that. Your unemployment benefits are funded by employer taxes to the NYS Department of Labor. If you need to check your eligibility or file a claim, you can log into your my.ny.gov account.
The whole system is set up so employers fund unemployment insurance through their quarterly tax payments to both federal and state agencies. When you file with NYS Department of Labor, they're using money from this pool. If you ever have trouble reaching them about your claim status, I used claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent - there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

•Check your payment history on the NYS Department of Labor website. Sometimes there are issues that stop payment and you need to call them.

•I had this happen when I couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor by phone. Ended up using Claimyr.com to get connected to an agent - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. The agent was able to see there was a technical glitch holding up my payment and fixed it same day.

Same boat here - usually get paid Tuesday but nothing yet today. This system is so unreliable sometimes.
