Just remember you need to keep filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is being reviewed. A lot of people don't realize this and miss out on benefits they were entitled to.
Also make sure you understand the monetary eligibility requirements. You need sufficient wages in your base period which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 quarters before you file. If you don't have enough wages in the standard base period they might use an alternate base period. The minimum wage requirement changes but it's around $2,800 in your highest earning quarter I think.
I tried calling the NYS Department of Labor like 50 times to ask about this exact scenario and could never get through to a real person. The automated system just keeps hanging up on me after being on hold forever. Anyone know a better way to actually talk to someone there?
I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to NYS Department of Labor agents when I was dealing with my adjudication issues. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.
honestly the whole unemployment system is so messed up, they make it impossible to get straight answers about anything
Wait I'm confused, why would you want LESS money?? Take what they're giving you! The unemployment system screws people over enough as it is. If they calculated it wrong that's THEIR problem not yours.
I just don't want to end up owing money back later if it's an overpayment. I've heard horror stories about people having to pay back thousands.
Been there! Check your online account on the NYS Department of Labor website - there should be a monetary determination that breaks down exactly how they calculated your benefit amount. It will show your base period quarters and the wages from each employer. That's the best way to verify if the calculation is correct.

Same boat here with the timing question. My payment status shows 'issued' but nothing in my account yet. It's been 2 days since it showed issued.

•If it shows 'issued' that means NYS Department of Labor has sent the payment to your bank. Should be there within 24-48 hours max. Different banks process at different times though.

Just want to add that if you're new to UI benefits, the first few payments can be unpredictable timing-wise. After about a month it becomes very regular. Also make sure your bank account info is exactly right in the system because even small errors can delay everything.
