Just want to say hang in there - I know how stressful the waiting period is when you're worried about bills. Most people do get approved eventually if they qualify. Keep checking your my.ny.gov account for any messages or requests for documentation.
The NYS Department of Labor has been pretty overwhelmed lately from what I hear. My cousin works there and says they're still dealing with higher than normal claim volumes. But like others said, as long as you were laid off due to downsizing and not fired for misconduct, your claim should go through fine. Just takes time unfortunately.
I tried calling the NYS Department of Labor like 50 times to ask about this exact scenario and could never get through to a real person. The automated system just keeps hanging up on me after being on hold forever. Anyone know a better way to actually talk to someone there?
I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to NYS Department of Labor agents when I was dealing with my adjudication issues. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.
honestly the whole unemployment system is so messed up, they make it impossible to get straight answers about anything
Just remember you need to keep filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is being reviewed. A lot of people don't realize this and miss out on benefits they were entitled to.
I went through this exact situation last year. Had to quit because my supervisor was creating a hostile work environment. Got approved for unemployment but it took forever - like 8 weeks of adjudication. The trick is when you file your claim, be very specific about why you quit and provide all your documentation upfront. Don't just say 'bad boss' - explain the specific actions that made continuing work impossible. Also if you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to check on your claim status, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to speak with an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works.

Also make sure you understand the monetary eligibility requirements. You need sufficient wages in your base period which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 quarters before you file. If you don't have enough wages in the standard base period they might use an alternate base period. The minimum wage requirement changes but it's around $2,800 in your highest earning quarter I think.

•How do I know what my base period wages are? Is that something I can check online somewhere?

•You can see your wage history when you file your claim through the NYS Department of Labor website. They'll show you exactly what wages they have on record for each quarter and whether you meet the requirements.

Don't forget you also have to register with the state job matching system as part of your claim. It's all done online now through the NYS Department of Labor portal. You'll need to create a complete profile with your work history, skills, and job preferences.
