Just wanted to add - if you're filing because you were laid off, the application might ask for additional details about your layoff that could add time. I had to explain the circumstances around my position being eliminated and that took some thought to word correctly.
Honestly the whole UI system is designed to make it as difficult as possible. Even when you fill everything out perfectly they'll find some reason to delay your benefits. I've been waiting 6 weeks for my adjudication to clear and nobody can tell me why.
If you're having trouble getting through to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual NYS Department of Labor agent without waiting on hold forever. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really saved me from hours of calling and getting busy signals.
The NYS Department of Labor system is SO SLOW. I've been waiting 5 weeks now and still nothing! They keep saying 'processing' but no one can tell me what's actually happening with my claim.
If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to get clarification on your denial, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I was stuck trying to call for weeks about my adjudication issue and this got me connected within a day. Might be worth checking out to get answers about your denial reason.
Be super careful with this! The government loves to find reasons to make you pay money back. Even if its technically allowed they might decide later that you weren't really available for work and demand repayment of everything. I've seen people get hit with huge overpayment notices years later.
The main thing is being honest about everything. When she files her initial claim, she needs to disclose the disability situation upfront. During weekly certification, she has to report the disability income. As long as she's transparent and can demonstrate genuine work search efforts within her medical limitations, she should be okay. Keep detailed records of all job applications and doctor communications.

I was in a similar situation last year and had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about options. Spent weeks calling and either getting busy signals or hung up on. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. The agent confirmed there are no extensions available but helped me understand other benefit programs I could apply for. Worth checking out if you need to speak with someone directly.

•Thanks, I'll look into that. I've been trying to call for days with no luck.

•Extended Benefits (EB) are triggered when state unemployment rates hit certain thresholds, but New York's rate hasn't been high enough to trigger EB recently. It's a federal-state program that's separate from regular UI.
