just file anyway!! the worst they can say is no and then you appeal. i got fired for being late too much (my car kept breaking down) and still got approved after they reviewed everything
The unemployment system is such a mess. They make it so confusing whether you qualify or not. I've seen people get denied for ridiculous reasons and others get approved when they probably shouldn't have. Just depends on who reviews your case I guess.
Been dealing with this recently and it's frustrating how confusing they make the whole process. If you need to actually talk to someone at NYS Department of Labor about your specific situation, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Saved me hours of trying to call and getting busy signals.
How much does something like that cost though? Seems like it should be free to talk to them about your own benefits.
The percentage thing is misleading because there are minimums and maximums that affect most people. I think the minimum weekly benefit is like $104 and maximum is $504 for this year. So if you're a higher earner, you're definitely not getting 50% of your actual wages. More like 30-35% once you hit that cap.
The system is so messed up. I got denied because they said I didn't do enough job searches even though I applied to like 20 places. They want you to jump through all these hoops and then still find reasons to deny you.
wait I thought if you quit you automatically can't get unemployment? I've been at a terrible job for months because I thought I'd lose benefits
No, that's a common misconception. You can quit and still get benefits if you have 'good cause' - things like unsafe working conditions, significant changes to your job duties or pay, harassment, or other compelling reasons. But you have to be able to prove it and show you tried to resolve the situation first.
The system is SO broken honestly. I've been fighting with NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my claim and they keep giving me different answers every time I finally get through to someone. Good luck getting anyone on the phone without waiting hours. And don't even get me started on their website crashing all the time when you're trying to file your weekly claim.
Yeah the phone system is a nightmare. That's why people are using services like that Claimyr thing to get through. Worth it when you're dealing with claim issues.

Your benefit calculation seems normal to me. I was making about the same and get $415/week. The system takes your highest earning quarter and divides by 26, so it's not based on your full year salary like some people think.

Back to the original question though - unemployment was definitely lower during 2017-2019 but then shot up to like 14% during the pandemic. Now it's back down but job quality seems different somehow. I've been on unemployment twice in the last 3 years and finding decent paying work is harder even though the 'rate' looks good on paper.
