Why is the IRS not showing my 2023 tax balance yet? Return accepted over a month ago

I filed my 2023 taxes about 5 weeks ago and they were accepted right away according to my tax software, but I'm having an issue with the IRS website. Every time I log in and try to view my 2023 balance, I keep getting this message: "Your Information Is Not Available at This Time If you requested an adjustment to your account your information will not be available until that transaction is complete." I owe around $3,800 and want to just pay it off before I forget, but the IRS isn't making this simple. In previous years (2021 and 2022), my balance would show up automatically within a week or two after filing, and I could just pay it through their payment portal. Is there something extra I need to do this year? Has anyone else experienced this delay? The filing deadline for 2025 is coming up soon and I'm getting a bit anxious about this.

It's definitely not a scam! They use a combination of automated technology and call patterns to navigate the IRS phone tree more efficiently than a typical caller. You might want to check if you have an installment agreement from a previous year still active. That happened to me and was preventing my new balance from showing up. Had to call and have them close out the old agreement even though it was paid off.

I hadn't thought of that! I did have an installment plan back in 2020, but I paid it off early. I thought it automatically closed once it was paid off. Would that still be affecting things three years later?

Sometimes those agreements don't automatically close in the system even when fully paid. I learned this the hard way after being confused for weeks. When I finally reached someone at the IRS, they said my old agreement was still marked as "active" in their system despite being paid off two years ago. The rep had to manually close it out, and then my current year balance appeared within a few days. It's definitely worth checking if you've ever had an installment agreement before, as this is a common issue that can prevent your current balance from displaying properly.

Have you checked your transcript instead of just the account balance? Sometimes the transcript will show the return is processed even when the account page doesn't update.

This is good advice. The wage and income transcript might also show if there are any discrepancies between what was reported on the return and what the IRS has on file from employers and banks. I've found the transcript to be more helpful than the account page when troubleshooting.

Just wanted to say I had this EXACT same problem, and in my case, it randomly fixed itself after about 6 weeks. I never called or did anything special - the balance just appeared one day. The IRS is operating on stone age technology so patience is unfortunately required sometimes.

I'm dealing with the exact same frustrating situation! Filed in early March, accepted immediately, but still getting that "Your Information Is Not Available" message when I try to check my balance. One thing that helped me was checking my account transcript instead of just the balance page - go to "Get Transcript" and look at your Account Transcript for 2023. Mine actually showed the return was processed even though the balance page was still showing the error message. Also, if you know you owe $3,800, you can absolutely make a payment now through IRS Direct Pay without waiting for the balance to show up. Just select "Form 1040" and "2023" as the tax year. The system will accept payments even when your balance isn't displaying properly. I did this last week and got a confirmation number, so at least I know my payment went through. The waiting is nerve-wracking but from what I've read, this seems to be happening to a lot of people this year. Hopefully both our accounts update soon!
