Urgent: 2025 IRS Transcript Shows Unauthorized Power of Attorney (POA/TIA) on File - How Did This Happen?

Just checked my transcript and noticed it shows Power of Attorney/Tax Information Authorization on file but I never authorized this. Been comparing with others and nobody else seems to have this on their account. How does this even happen and who could have put it there? Really concerned about this. I pulled my Account Transcript from the IRS website today (01-29-2025) and was shocked to see this. The transcript shows: Internal Revenue Service United States Department of the Treasury This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data Request Date: 01-28-2025 Response Date: 01-27-2025 Account Transcript FORM NUMBER: 1040 TAX PERIOD: Dec. 31, 2023 And then right there in the middle it says: <<<<POWER OF ATTORNEY/TAX INFORMATION AUTHORIZATION (POA/TIA) ON FILE>>>> I NEVER authorized anyone to have Power of Attorney or Tax Information Authorization for my taxes! The rest of the transcript shows: ACCOUNT BALANCE: 0.00 ACCRUED INTEREST: 0.00 AS OF: Jan. 15, 2025 ACCRUED PENALTY: 0.00 AS OF: Jan. 15, 2025 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): 0.00 ** INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED EXEMPTIONS: 04 FILING STATUS: Married Filing Joint My account balance is zero, so it's not like there's money missing, but I'm really worried that someone has access to my tax information without my knowledge. I've been asking friends and family members who also check their transcripts, and NONE of them have this POA/TIA line on their transcripts. Has anyone else seen this? How could this happen? Would the IRS just randomly assign someone POA access to my account? Do I need to call them immediately? I'm seriously concerned that someone might be trying to steal my identity or worse.

Tax pro here - A POA/TIA showing up means someone has filed Form 2848 (Power of Attorney) or Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) with the IRS. This could be a tax preparer, accountant, or lawyer. Check if you signed any paperwork with your tax preparer or if you've worked with any tax resolution services. You can contact the IRS directly to see who has the authorization and revoke it if needed.

Instead of trying to piece together whats happening, you should try taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes your entire transcript and explains everything, including stuff like POAs. It costs $4.99 but saved me hours of googling and anxiety. Check it out here: https://taxr.ai

YES! It breaks down every code, date, and entry. Even told me exactly why my refund was delayed and when to expect it

You can check who has access on IRS.gov. Login to your account and look under authorizations. It shows everyone who can view your stuff.
