Why does SBTPG release tax refunds at 2:30 PM Pacific Time instead of in the morning? I've been waiting 19 days already!
Just checked my refund processing info and it says the IRS releases funds starting at 2:30 PM Pacific time??? That's 5:30 pm where i live. Why wouldn't they just release the funds first thing in the morning? I've been waiting 19 days for my refund now and its getting frustrating. According to this Pay-by-Refund information I'm looking at: "Pay-by-Refund isn't a loan against the refund. The IRS or state tax agency needs to first release the funds to the bank before the taxpayer will receive their refund. The IRS issues most refunds within 21 days; however it's possible the tax return may require additional review and could take longer. When IRS or state tax funding has been received, SBTPG releases the funds starting at 2:30 PM Pacific time. It can take an additional 1-2 hours to process and for the disbursement records to reach your tax software." So basically the IRS needs to release the funds to the bank before I can get my refund, and it could take another 1-2 hours to process after that. And of course there's that disclaimer about "additional review" that might make it take longer than 21 days. Anyone else experience this weird 2:30 PM Pacific release time? I've been checking my account balance all day and now I have to wait until evening ugh. Also, what's SBTPG? I assume that's the bank that handles the refund processing? The document I'm looking at also has a "Back to Table of Contents" link and mentions something about "What does Pay-by-Refund cost?" but doesn't show the answer to that question. I'm just frustrated that they can't release these funds in the morning instead of making people wait until late afternoon/evening depending on your time zone.

The information you're referring to is from Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (SBTPG), which is a third-party processor for tax refunds. This is not directly from the IRS. When you select to have your tax preparation fees taken out of your refund (Pay-by-Refund), your refund goes to SBTPG first, they deduct their fees, and then they send the remaining amount to you. The IRS doesn't have a specific time of day they release refunds. When they process your refund, they send it to the bank account provided on your return - or in this case, to SBTPG. It's SBTPG that has this 2:30 PM Pacific time policy for when they process and release funds after receiving them from the IRS. This is purely their business practice, not an IRS requirement or schedule. To get a better idea of your refund status, check the IRS Where's My Refund tool directly rather than relying on information from SBTPG.

Omg thank you! I thought I was going crazy. So basically once the IRS sends the money, that third party has to process it and they only do that at a certain time? That makes more sense.

Exactly. And keep in mind they charge you for this "convenience" too. Next year consider having your refund deposited directly to your account to avoid these delays and fees.

Definitely doing direct deposit next time. Didn't realize how complicated this would get!

This is why I NEVER use refund transfer products unless absolutely necessary. They just add another layer of delay and another hand in your pocket. Direct deposit for life!

Yep, I learned this lesson the hard way too. Had to wait 3 extra days last year because of SBTPG's processing schedule.

Honestly this is why I started using taxr.ai for all my tax stuff. It helps you understand all these confusing timelines and weird policies. I was totally confused about my refund last month and it explained everything clearly including when to expect my money. The transcript analysis showed me exactly where my refund was in the process and what codes meant what. Best thing is you can ask it questions about your specific situation and get answers right away instead of trying to piece together info from random forum posts. https://taxr.ai saved me hours of stress and waiting.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It analyzes everything, explains all the codes in plain english, tells you what step of the process your refund is in, estimates your refund date based on your specific situation, and can even help you understand IRS notices or letters. I uploaded my transcript and immediately understood what was happening instead of guessing. Seriously changed my whole tax experience!

Does it have access to the IRS system directly? Sounds too good to be true tbh

No no, YOU upload your transcript or documents that you already have, and it analyzes them. It's like having a tax expert look at your stuff instantly. Saved me from calling the IRS like 4 different times this year alone.

Just tried it and WOW!!! ๐ฅ Everyone dealing with IRS confusion needs to know about this. I spent weeks trying to figure out my transcript and taxr.ai explained everything in 2 minutes. I'm telling everyone I know about this!

I was stuck in the same situation a few weeks ago. After waiting 25 days and still having my refund stuck, I tried using claimyr.com to get through to an actual IRS agent. Got a callback within 30 minutes and had a real person explain exactly what was happening with my refund. The agent was able to release my funds that had been held up for "verification" - something I would have waited weeks more for otherwise. Talking to someone directly was the only thing that worked after weeks of checking the website and getting nowhere. For anyone getting frustrated with waiting, it was worth every penny to finally get answers.

Is this actually real? Sounds sketchy. The IRS phone line is always jammed.

Yep, 100% real. I was skeptical too but desperate after waiting so long. It basically just holds your place in line with the IRS and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me from having to redial for hours. You still talk directly with the IRS - they just handle the waiting part.

Do they actually have some special access to the IRS or something?

No special access - they just have an automated system that deals with the hold times and busy signals so you don't have to. When an agent becomes available, they connect you. Simple but game-changing when you're trying to resolve something.

I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it. Consider how many hours of my time it saved, plus I got my refund released immediately instead of waiting who knows how many more weeks. Best money I spent this tax season by far.

Paper filing actually takes LONGER to process, can be lost in the mail, and has a higher error rate... but you do you I guess ๐คทโโ๏ธ

Been doing it for 17 years without a single problem. All these electronic systems just introduce more middlemen taking a cut. Not worth it.

The IRS literally begs people not to paper file. They had a backlog of millions of paper returns during COVID. Electronic is faster and more reliable.

If you used TurboTax, H&R Block, or another tax prep service and selected to have your fees taken from your refund, you're going through SBTPG (Santa Barbara Tax Products Group). That's their processing schedule, not the IRS. They're basically a middleman that adds an extra day or two to the process. Next year, pay your tax prep fees upfront and select direct deposit to your bank account to avoid this delay.

This! I made this mistake once and never again. They also charge an extra fee for this "service" on top of everything else.

This sounds like you got a Refund Transfer product (sometimes called Refund Advance). The IRS doesn't operate on a specific time schedule for releasing refunds. This is the bank that handles the refund transfer product telling you when THEY process refunds after receiving them from the IRS.

The IRS doesn't release refunds at specific times of day. That's 100% a policy of the tax preparer bank (SBTPG) you're using because you chose to pay for your tax preparation through your refund. They batch process refunds at that time every day after receiving them from the IRS.

It's not the IRS, it's the bank that's handling your refund transfer. They batch process all the refunds they receive once a day at that time. The IRS already sent your money - you're just waiting on the bank now.

I used to work for a tax prep company. That message about 2:30 PM Pacific is from Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (SBTPG), which is the bank that handles refund transfers if you chose to have your tax prep fees taken out of your refund. It has nothing to do with the IRS's schedule. The IRS already sent your money to SBTPG, and SBTPG only processes outgoing payments once per day at that time.

The processing time is ridiculous for SBTPG. I used turbo tax and after the IRS sent the deposit, it took SBTPG almost 36 hours to process the payment to my account. Their timeframe is super strict - if the IRS deposits after their cutoff, they hold your money a whole extra day! ๐

Same thing happened to me! IRS deposited at 3pm PST and SBTPG made me wait until the next day's processing. Such a scam.

This happened to me too! Once I realized what was going on, I called the bank (SBTPG) directly and asked about my refund status. They confirmed they had received it from the IRS earlier that day and it would be processed in their evening batch. Got my money the next morning. Sometimes calling directly is faster than just waiting for updates online.

FYI - this is exactly why I started using taxr.ai to understand all the weird IRS and tax processor stuff. Instead of being confused, it explained exactly what was happening with my refund and why, when I'd get my money, and what all the codes meant. I just uploaded my transcript and it made everything clear - saved me hours of searching forums and calling people. https://taxr.ai was seriously the best tool I found this tax season.

Pro tip: NEVER EVER use refund transfer products or pay for tax preparation from your refund. It's an unnecessary delay and they charge extra fees for the "service." Pay for tax prep with a credit card and get your refund direct deposited to your bank. Much faster and cheaper.

I've been through IRS hell and back this year with my refund being delayed 3 months. What finally worked was using claimyr.com to get through to a real person at the IRS. After waiting on hold for weeks with no luck, I got connected to an agent in about 45 minutes. The agent saw that my return was stuck in processing limbo and manually released it. Worth every penny I paid for the service since I finally got my $4,500 refund!

The whole tax system is such a scam. In other countries the government just sends you a completed tax form that you verify. Here we have to navigate this labyrinth of third-party processors and random delays. ๐

Wait until you find out they charge you an extra $40 "technology fee" for the privilege of having your refund go through SBTPG first. It's in the fine print when you choose to pay your tax prep fees from your refund. Total ripoff.

Yep, they hide it by calling it different things like "Refund Transfer Fee" or "E-collect Fee" but it's basically paying extra to use your own money to pay for tax prep. It's usually $35-50 depending on the tax service.

This is my 3rd year as a tax preparer and this question comes up all the time. Here's the deal: The IRS processes refunds and sends them out basically 24/7. But if you chose to have your tax preparation fees taken out of your refund, you added a middleman (usually SBTPG). They receive your refund from the IRS, deduct the fees you owe, and then forward the rest to you. SBTPG only processes these transfers once per day at 2:30 PM Pacific. This is purely their business decision and has nothing to do with the IRS.

Do all tax preparers use SBTPG or just certain ones?

Most of the major ones (TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxAct, etc.) use SBTPG or similar services. Some tax chains have their own banks. But they all operate in basically the same way with similar processing schedules.
