IRS refund posted to SBTPG on 2/25 but still not received in my account after two months

Yesterday morning I checked my SBTPG account and it shows my federal refund was posted on 4/22/25. It's now 4/23 and nothing has hit my bank account yet. I filed through FreeTaxUSA and chose to have my fees taken out of my refund. On SBTPG's site it shows the payment was posted but not even a pending deposit in my actual bank account. When I check the SBTPG website (taxpayer.sbtpg.com) at 4:55, I can clearly see under "Amount(s) received by sbtpg" that my Federal tax refund (IRS) is listed with a "Date posted" of 2/25/25. There's a section showing "Fee amount(s)" which includes "Total requested", "Total bank fees", and "Total other fees" - but I'm concerned about why it's taking so long to transfer to my bank account. It's been almost two months since the date posted (2/25/25) shown on their system! I understand they need to deduct their fees since I opted to have them taken from my refund through FreeTaxUSA, but this seems like an excessively long wait time. Anyone else experienced this delay between SBTPG posting and actually receiving your money? Is this normal for SBTPG to show a payment as posted but then take this long to actually release the funds to your bank account?

Aiden Rodríguez

SBTPG typically takes 1-3 business days to process your refund after they receive it from the IRS. The date you see (4/22) is when SBTPG received your money from the IRS, not when they sent it to your bank. They need to take out their fees first, then process the payment to your bank, which can then take another 1-2 business days to show in your account depending on your bank's policies. I would give it until the end of the week before getting concerned. If you don't see anything by Friday, contact SBTPG directly through their customer service line. They can verify if the payment was sent to your bank account and provide a trace number if needed. This is extremely common - the delay between SBTPG receiving and you getting your money is frustrating but normal.

thx for responding. i guess I was confused bc it said 'posted' so i thought that meant it was already sent to my bank.

Yeah I had the exact same thing happen last week! Posted on Monday, didn't get to my bank until Thursday morning. Super annoying but seems standard.

SBTPG is terrible with communication. One year they held mine for 10 days with no explanation.

Call them! I waited a week after mine said 'posted' and turns out they needed to verify my identity. Wasted so much time when I could have just called day 1.

That's exactly it - their terminology is confusing. 'Posted' means they received it, not that they sent it to you. They're basically a middle-man that gets paid to confuse us lol.

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago. After hours of confusion and trying to figure out where my money was, I found this tool called taxr.ai that basically translated my whole transcript and explained everything that was happening with my refund. It showed me exactly when SBTPG received my money and when it would hit my account based on historical processing times. Saved me so much headache since the IRS and SBTPG websites are impossible to navigate. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It basically takes your transcript and analyzes all the codes and dates that the IRS uses (which make zero sense to normal people lol). It told me exactly what was happening with my refund and even predicted when I'd get it within 1 day accuracy. Literally saved me hours of googling random IRS codes and calling SBTPG. Best tool I've used this tax season by far!

OMG just tried it and this is AMAZING!!! Finally understand what all those random numbers on my transcript mean. Why doesn't everyone know about this?? Showing exactly what happened with my refund and when SBTPG should deposit. Thank you thank you thank you! 🙏

Another service claiming to decode the IRS? Seems sketchy tbh

Not sketchy at all - it just reads your transcript data that you upload. Doesn't ask for SSN or anything personal. They explain everything on their site about security.

wait does it actually tell you when you're gettin paid? I'm so tired of checking my bank app every 5 minutes 😭

Yes! It analyzes SBTPG processing times and gave me an estimated deposit date that was spot on. Way more accurate than the vague info from the IRS.

After 2 weeks of waiting for my refund that was supposedly 'posted' to SBTPG, I FINALLY figured out how to talk to an actual human at the IRS about it. Used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. The agent confirmed SBTPG had my money and gave me their direct contact info. Called SBTPG with that info and they released my payment same day. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person!

Hmm sounds too good to be true. How does that even work? The IRS phone lines are always jammed.

They basically navigate the IRS phone system for you and hold your place in line. When they get close to an agent, they call you and connect you. Saved me HOURS of listening to that awful hold music and getting disconnected. Talking to the agent directly was what finally got my money moving.

Do they charge for this? Feels wrong that we have to pay just to talk to a government agency we already fund with our taxes.

They do, but after wasting 3 days trying to get through myself, it was the best money I've spent all year. Got my $3700 refund unstuck in one phone call. Total no-brainer.

So I worked as a tax preparer and can explain what's happening. SBTPG is a "middleman" that processes refunds when you choose to have your tax prep fees deducted from your refund. The "posted" date just means when they received the money from the IRS. After that, they: 1) Take out their fees 2) Take out the tax prep fees 3) Process the remainder to your bank which takes 1-3 business days. The entire process usually takes 2-5 business days from the "posted" date. If you're really concerned, you can call SBTPG at 800-901-6663 to check status.

This ^^^ is the correct answer. SBTPG is basically holding your money hostage for a few days while they take their cut.

Can confirm. Worked at a tax office and this is exactly right. Also worth noting that if you filed joint with a spouse, sometimes they do extra verification which can add a day or two.

apreciate the detailed explanation! will definitely be patient a few more days.

Next year don't pay for tax prep with your refund! That's the whole reason SBTPG exists - they charge a fee to advance the tax prep fee to the company you filed with, then take it back when they get your refund. If you just pay the tax prep fee upfront with a credit card, your refund goes straight from IRS to your bank with no middleman and no delay.

100% this. I learned this lesson last year. SBTPG is literally just a loan company that's charging you extra to get your own money.

i didnt even realize that's how it worked! Definitely gonna pay upfront next time. the extra delay isnt worth it

Not everyone can afford to pay prep fees upfront. For some people, the delay is worth not having to come up with the money before getting their refund.

True, but there are also free filing options for most people. IRS Free File or even FreeTaxUSA doesn't charge much for state filing. Just saying there are better options than letting SBTPG hold your money.

I'm in the same boat right now. Mine posted to SBTPG yesterday too and nothing in my account yet. So annoying. When I check my SBTPG account does it at least show the amount after they took their fees?

Check if you entered the wrong bank info! My friend had this happen and after a week of waiting she realized she transposed two digits in her account number when filing. SBTPG had to mail her a paper check which took another 2 weeks 😫

Just double checked and my bank info is correct in the SBTPG portal. So hopefully thats not the issue!

Santa Barbara Tax Products Group. They're the bank that handles refund transfers when you choose to have your tax prep fees taken out of your refund instead of paying upfront.

ahh that makes sense. I always pay for my filing upfront so never dealt with them.

Ugh the SBTPG wait is THE WORST. Last year mine said "posted" for 4 days before hitting my account. Their customer service is useless too - just told me "it's processing" when I called. Just be patient, it'll show up... eventually.

One thing nobody mentioned - if you owe any federal or state debts (like student loans, child support, etc.) SBTPG might be holding your refund for offset verification. This happened to me last year - said posted but then took a week because they were verifying if any of it needed to be garnished.

0 coins

-

Maya Patel

I dont have any debts or garnishments that i know of. So hoping that's not the case

Offsets would typically happen before the IRS sends to SBTPG, not after. If SBTPG has it, offsets have already been handled.

The IRS and their "partners" are such a joke. So many unnecessary delays for what should be a simple process. I'll never understand why it takes 3-5 business days to move money electronically in 2025 🤡

Because they're making interest on your money while they hold it! Even a few days of millions of refunds sitting in their accounts makes them significant money.

I had this exact issue two weeks ago. Check the SBTPG portal carefully and look for any verification requirements. In my case, I had to verify my identity because my refund was over a certain amount. There was a tiny notification in the portal I almost missed. After I verified, the money hit my account next day.

Have you checked your spam folder for emails from SBTPG? I was waiting for mine and didn't realize they'd emailed me asking for additional verification. Once I completed that, my refund was deposited the next day.

I was having the exact same issue last month. Found out it was because my name on my tax return didn't exactly match my bank account (I used my middle initial on one but not the other). SBTPG rejected the deposit and had to mail me a check instead. Might be worth checking if your name format exactly matches.

Everyone here keeps saying wait a few days but if you need that money NOW, call SBTPG directly and ask them to expedite it. Last year I called and told them I had urgent bills to pay and they processed mine same day. The squeaky wheel gets the grease! Their number is 800-901-6663.
