Transcript Updated to DDD of 2/26 - SBTPG Holding Funds Until DDD
Just a heads up for anyone checking the IRS2Go app obsessively like me 🙃 My transcript just updated showing DDD of 2/26! BUT here's the annoying part - if you filed through TurboTax and chose to pay your filing fees from your refund, SBTPG (Santa Barbara Tax Products Group) will hold your refund until the day before your DDD. So even if your bank releases funds early, it doesn't matter. Just checked the SBTPG website and yep, they're sitting on my money until the 25th. I run a small online shop and was hoping to restock inventory ASAP, but looks like I'm waiting a few more days. Anyone else dealing with this? irs.gov/refunds shows processing but SBTPG is the real holdup.

You're absolutely right about this. SBTPG typically holds onto refunds until the day before the official DDD in most cases. It's actually part of their agreement with the IRS, from what I understand. They essentially act as a middleman to ensure the filing fees get paid before releasing the remainder to you. If you're looking to avoid this next year, you might want to consider paying your filing fees upfront instead of having them deducted from your refund. That way your refund goes directly from the IRS to your bank without the SBTPG delay.

Oh my goodness, I was SO confused about this exact situation! 😫 My transcript showed a deposit date but nothing was showing up in my account. I was getting really worried something had gone wrong! I finally figured out what was happening when I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript. It explained the whole SBTPG process and showed me exactly why there was a delay between my DDD and when I'd actually get my money. Saved me from calling the IRS in a panic! I wish I'd known about this tool earlier in the tax season!

I was in the exact same situation with the SBTPG hold and needed my refund ASAP for my business quarterly estimated payments. After waiting on hold with the IRS for hours trying to see if there was anything I could do to expedite, I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They got me connected to an actual IRS agent in under 25 minutes who confirmed my DDD and explained the SBTPG process in detail. The agent even provided the direct SBTPG escalation number that isn't on their website.

Did you actually need to talk to the IRS though? This seems like a SBTPG issue, not an IRS one. The IRS already did their part by approving your refund.

How much did Claimyr charge for this service? I'm wondering if it's worth it since I've been on hold with the IRS for exactly 2 hours and 17 minutes today trying to get information about my SBTPG situation. Did they actually help resolve anything or just confirm what you already knew?

Been there, done that. Had this exact issue last year. Why do they need to hold our money for so long when the IRS has already approved the refund? It's ridiculous! I called SBTPG directly at 800-901-6663 and while they wouldn't release my funds early, the rep at least confirmed everything was fine and gave me the exact time (not just date) my deposit would hit my account. Worth the 15 minute call just for peace of mind.

There's actually a workaround for this that not many people know about: • Next time, choose to pay your TurboTax fees directly with a credit card • This bypasses SBTPG completely • Your refund goes straight from IRS to your bank • Many banks (Chime, Cash App, etc.) will then give you access 2-5 days early I'm slightly worried about how many people don't realize they're essentially paying extra by letting SBTPG hold their money. It's basically an additional fee in the form of lost time/interest.

This approach worked perfectly for me this year. I used my Amex to pay the TurboTax preparation fees, then my refund went directly to my bank account. The IRS deposited my funds 2 days before the official DDD because my credit union releases government deposits early. No SBTPG involvement whatsoever.

Does this work with state refunds too? Or just federal? I'm wondering if there's any downside to paying upfront that I'm missing... seems like a no-brainer if you have a credit card. 🤔

Thank you for spelling this out so clearly. I've been using TurboTax for years and never realized I was causing my own delays by having the fees taken out of my refund. Will definitely pay directly next year.

I believe you can also check your refund status directly on the SBTPG website if you're concerned. I think you need your SSN and the exact refund amount. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they might also have a way to change your direct deposit information if needed. It might be worth exploring if you're really in a hurry for those business supplies.

This is really helpful advice. Many people don't realize SBTPG has their own tracking system separate from the IRS. I've found their website actually updates more frequently than the IRS one once your refund reaches them. Checking both gives you the complete picture of where your money is in the process.

Can you still change your direct deposit info after the IRS has already approved the refund? Last year I tried to update my banking details with SBTPG when I closed an account, but they told me it was too late in the process. Has this changed recently?

Is the SBTPG tracking available for all tax preparation services or just TurboTax? I used H&R Block and paid from my refund, but I'm not sure who their equivalent to SBTPG is. How would I find this information?

According to IRS Publication 1345 (Handbook for Authorized e-File Providers), refund anticipation check (RAC) providers like SBTPG must adhere to specific timing requirements when processing tax refunds. They are permitted to hold funds for verification purposes to prevent fraud, which is why they typically wait until the day before the official Direct Deposit Date to release funds. The IRS actually encourages taxpayers to file Form 14157 (Complaint: Tax Return Preparer) if they believe a RAC provider is unnecessarily delaying refund disbursement beyond these guidelines. However, the one-day hold before DDD is considered standard practice and within regulatory compliance.

Pro tip from someone who's been thru this many times: next yr just pay the TT fees upfront w/ a CC and avoid SBTPG completely. The $39 or whatever for deluxe isn't worth the extra wait IMO. Also check out the SBTPG FB group - ppl post when deposits start hitting and you can get a better idea of timing. GL w/ your biz inventory!
