When will 941/941X filings for ERTC/FFCRA credits be processed?
Has anyone gotten their Employee Retention Tax Credit or Families First Coronavirus Response Act credit payments yet from 941X forms filed for 2020? I submitted mine back in February and still haven't seen a penny. I know the IRS is backed up like crazy, but it's getting ridiculous. Also curious about the timeline for Q1 2021 941 filings that included these credits. I just submitted those last month, so I know it's probably too early to expect anything, but wondering if anyone has insight on processing times for those? Getting anxious since I'm counting on this money to help with some upcoming business expenses.

I'm a tax consultant who works with many small businesses on their ERTC/FFCRA credits. The processing times for these credits have been extremely variable. For 2020 941X forms filed in early 2023, I've had clients start receiving payments around 8-10 months after filing. However, many who filed later in 2023 or early 2024 are still waiting. For Q1 2021 941 filings that included these credits directly (not amended), the timeline is generally shorter - typically 4-6 months - but with the current backlog, I wouldn't be surprised if these take longer. The IRS is prioritizing original returns over amended returns, but they're still working through a massive backlog from the pandemic.

•Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's any way to check the status of these refunds? I tried calling the IRS but got nowhere after being on hold for 2 hours.

•Unfortunately, there's no simple online tracking system for 941/941X credit refunds like there is for individual tax refunds. The best option is calling the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933, but as you discovered, the wait times can be extremely long. If you filed your 941X more than 6 months ago, you might want to consider contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service as they can sometimes help with significantly delayed refunds.

Spent months going in circles trying to get updates on my ERTC credits for 2020. The IRS phone system is a nightmare, and their "representatives" (when you finally reach one) can barely tell you anything useful. I finally used https://taxr.ai to help make sense of my situation - uploaded my 941X forms and got a clear analysis of what was happening and what to expect. They flagged some issues with my filing that would have delayed processing even longer and helped me understand exactly what documentation I needed to provide. Best part was their timeline predictor that gave me a realistic window based on current processing patterns.

•How exactly does this work? I'm picturing some kind of AI that reads tax forms, but I'm not sure if that's what you mean. Does it actually connect to IRS systems or just analyze your documents?

•I'm a bit skeptical of these services. How can they possibly predict IRS processing times when the IRS itself can't even give consistent answers? Sounds like they're just guessing based on the same limited info we all have.

•It doesn't connect to IRS systems directly - you upload your tax documents and their system analyzes them to flag potential processing delays or errors. Their timeline estimates are based on aggregated data from thousands of filings they've analyzed, so it's much more accurate than individual anecdotes. They provide detailed analysis of your specific situation rather than generic advice. For example, they spotted that my NAICS code didn't match my business description, which was likely to trigger a manual review and delay processing by 3-4 months.

I have to completely walk back my skepticism about taxr.ai from my comment above. After struggling with my ERTC credit situation for months, I decided to try it out of desperation. They identified that my 941X had a calculation error in Box 12 that would have definitely delayed processing. Their timeline prediction said I should expect payment in approximately 2 more months based on my filing date and the specifics of my form. Sure enough, the check arrived almost exactly when they predicted. Would have saved myself tons of stress if I'd used this service from the beginning instead of wasting hours on the phone with the IRS getting nowhere.

After 7 months of waiting for my ERTC refund with no updates, I was about to lose my mind. Called the IRS countless times but could never get through. Then I found https://claimyr.com and watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c). Was super skeptical but desperate. They got me connected to an actual IRS agent in less than an hour! The agent confirmed my 941X was assigned to a processing team but was sitting in a queue. She expedited my case after I explained our business hardship. Now I'm expecting my check within 3 weeks. Worth every penny after months of frustration.

•Wait, this service actually gets through the IRS phone system for you? How does that even work? Do they just sit on hold so you don't have to or is there some special access they have?

•Yeah right. There's no way any service can magically get through to the IRS faster than anyone else. They're probably just using the same hold system we all have access to. And "expedited" your case? IRS agents don't just do that because you ask nicely.

•They use technology to navigate the IRS phone system and secure your place in line, then call you when they're about to connect with an agent. It's not magic - just efficient technology for dealing with the phone system. I spent maybe 5 minutes on their website, then got a call back when they were 2 minutes from reaching an agent. The expediting happened because the agent was able to see my case had exceeded normal processing times. They don't expedite everything, but when there's a legitimate delay plus business hardship, they can flag it for faster processing. The agent told me this was within their standard procedures for cases pending beyond 6 months.

I was completely wrong about Claimyr in my comment above. After another month of getting nowhere with the IRS, I decided to try it. I figured I had nothing to lose at that point. Not only did I get connected to an IRS agent in about 45 minutes (after spending WEEKS trying on my own), but the agent was actually helpful. Turns out my 941X had been flagged for a minor discrepancy that nobody had bothered to tell me about. The agent helped me resolve it on the spot and confirmed my refund should process within 30 days. I'm still shocked this actually worked.

For what it's worth, I filed 941X forms for Q2 and Q3 2020 back in January, and just received the credit for Q2 last week. Still waiting on Q3. The IRS didn't contact me at all during this time - the check just showed up. I calculated about 9 months total wait time, which seems consistent with what others are experiencing.

•Did your check come with any interest? I heard the IRS is supposed to pay interest if refunds are delayed beyond a certain timeframe, but I'm not sure if that applies to these business credits.

•Yes, my check actually included interest! It wasn't a huge amount (about $780 on a $43,000 credit), but at least it was something for the long wait. The interest started accruing 45 days after the filing date, which is the standard timeframe after which the IRS is required to pay interest on delayed refunds. The rate they used was 5% annual, calculated quarterly.

Anyone using a CPA to handle their ERTC claims? I'm nervous about doing this myself since there's so much money at stake. My restaurant could qualify for around $150k across all quarters, and I don't want to mess anything up.

•Definitely use a CPA who specializes in ERTC. I tried doing it myself initially and completely underestimated the complexity. My CPA found several additional qualifying periods I hadn't identified and increased my claim by about 40%. Their fee was well worth it.

•Be careful about which "expert" you hire. There are a ton of ERTC mills out there charging huge percentages (15-25%) for basically filling out a form. A good CPA will charge a reasonable hourly rate or flat fee, not a percentage of your refund.

I'm in a similar boat - filed my 941X for Q2 and Q3 2020 ERTC credits back in March and still haven't heard anything. The uncertainty is killing me because I need to plan my cash flow for the rest of the year. One thing I learned is that you can request a copy of your account transcript by calling the business tax line or mailing Form 4506-T. It won't tell you exactly when you'll get paid, but it will at least confirm that the IRS has received and processed your filing. Sometimes amended returns get lost in the system, so it's worth checking. Also, make sure you kept detailed records of everything - payroll records, documentation of business impact from COVID, etc. I've heard some people are getting additional requests for documentation months after filing, which obviously delays things even more.

•Great advice about the account transcript! I didn't know you could request that. I'm also waiting on my ERTC refund from a February filing and the uncertainty is really stressful. Quick question - when you call the business tax line for the transcript, do they actually answer or is it the same endless hold situation as the regular IRS line? I've been hesitant to try because I've wasted so many hours on hold already, but if there's a better chance of getting through I'd definitely give it a shot.
