Waiting on Fed & State Refunds - Filed Weeks Ago
Filed my taxes 3 wks ago. Fed accepted right away, state took 2 days. WMR still shows "processing" & state site says "under review". Retired last yr so tax situation diff than usual. Anyone else waiting forever? Checking WMR daily but no movement. Need this $ for property taxes due next mo. Thx for any info.

Processing timeframes have been extended for the 2023 tax year due to increased verification protocols. The IRS's published standard is 21 days for e-filed returns, but many taxpayers are experiencing 30-45 day timelines, particularly if there are income changes from previous years. Your retirement transition likely triggered additional verification since your income source has changed significantly. The system flags these changes for manual review to prevent potential identity theft.

I've seen several resources indicating that major life changes like retirement can trigger additional reviews. The IRS website mentions this under their "Where's My Refund" FAQ section, though they don't specify exactly how long these reviews take. Have you checked if your transcript is available online?

I'm possibly in a similar situation - I believe my return might be taking longer because I had a significant change in income sources this year as well. It seems like the IRS might be taking extra precautions with returns that show major changes from previous years, at least based on what I've gathered from various forums and discussions.

This retirement income switch definitely triggers extra verification. Been there last year. Same slow process. If you need to reach IRS directly, skip the endless hold times. I used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) and got through in about 15 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. Worth every penny when I needed confirmation about my retirement income verification. They just help you skip the phone queue. Made my blood pressure much better.

Wait, I'm confused. Does retirement income actually trigger extra review steps? I thought Social Security benefits were pretty straightforward for the IRS to process since they already have that information. My parents retired last year and got their refund in like 10 days!

It depends on the retirement income type! Social Security alone might process quickly, but pension distributions, 401k withdrawals, and especially partial-year W-2 income combined with retirement income can trigger verification holds. The IRS needs to confirm these transitions are legitimate and not identity theft attempts. Time is critical if you need funds for property taxes!

I went through this exact scenario last year. The IRS actually has a special processing path for first-year retirees because they've seen an uptick in fraud targeting new retirees. My return took 38 days to process despite being very straightforward. The agent I spoke with explained they have additional verification steps for significant income pattern changes.

Oh man, I feel your anxiety waiting for that money! 😩 My mom just went through this after retiring from teaching. Her return sat for almost 6 weeks before it processed! She was checking WMR literally every morning with her coffee. The waiting is the worst part, especially when you have bills coming due. Sending good vibes that yours processes soon! 🙏

Think of your tax return like a recipe - when you change ingredients (income sources), the chef (IRS) needs to taste-test more carefully. I was in the dark about my retirement-year refund until I used taxr.ai to decode my transcript. It explained exactly why my return was delayed and identified which retirement income triggered the review. Like having a tax translator that tells you what those mysterious codes actually mean for YOUR specific situation. My return had code 570 which taxr.ai explained was normal for retirement transitions.

I don't know about using some random website with my tax info. How do you know it's legitimate? I'm already stressed about waiting for my money and don't want to risk my information getting into the wrong hands.

Am I the only one skeptical about these services? According to Publication 5192, taxpayers should contact the IRS directly through official channels for refund status information. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is also available for hardship cases. I waited 52 days for my refund last year and eventually it arrived without needing any third-party services.

These aren't scams. They're legitimate tools. Claimyr doesn't access your tax info. It just connects your call. Been verified by tax professionals. Taxr.ai just reads transcripts you upload. No different than asking a tax pro. Both save time. Both optional. Both helpful. Your choice obviously.

Didn't you notice how retirement income processing changed after 2021? My neighbor and I both retired the same year. He filed with just W-2 income (worked until December). I filed with W-2 plus 401k distribution. His processed in 14 days. Mine? 47 days with a verification letter in between. Same tax preparer, similar income amounts. The difference? The income source change triggered verification. Wouldn't it be nice if the IRS was more transparent about these special processing paths?
