TurboTax satisfaction guarantee is a complete joke... anyone else?
I'm beyond frustrated with TurboTax right now. I spent hours doing my taxes online with them, and when I had an issue with my return, I tried to use their "satisfaction guarantee" that they plaster all over their website. Guess what? Apparently that guarantee doesn't apply to their online products! This feels like such a bait and switch. I called customer service and the rep basically told me "sorry, nothing we can do" even though I'm looking at their website right now with the guarantee prominently displayed. When I pointed that out, they just gave me the runaround. I've used TurboTax for the past 5 years but I'm definitely going elsewhere next year. This whole experience has left a really bad taste in my mouth. The worst part is I've already filed so I can't even switch to a different service for this year. Has anyone else run into this satisfaction guarantee nonsense with TurboTax? Any recommendations for better tax software that doesn't pull this kind of misleading garbage?

Tax professional here. Unfortunately, what you experienced is pretty common with many tax software companies. Their "guarantees" often come with a lot of fine print. With TurboTax specifically, their satisfaction guarantee typically only applies to their downloadable software products, not their online versions. If you look at the terms and conditions (which they know most people won't read), there's usually language that excludes online filing services from their guarantees. They can legally display the guarantee on their website as long as it applies to some of their products, even if it doesn't apply to all of them. For next year, I'd recommend looking into H&R Block, TaxSlayer, or FreeTaxUSA. All have more transparent pricing and policies in my experience. FreeTaxUSA is particularly good if you have a relatively straightforward return and want to save money. It's significantly cheaper than TurboTax with very similar functionality.

•Thanks for confirming I'm not crazy! I felt like I was taking crazy pills when the customer service rep kept telling me the guarantee didn't apply even though it was literally on the page I used. Do these other services have guarantees that actually mean something? And is it hard to transfer over several years of tax info if I switch?

•You're definitely not crazy! It's a frustrating tactic they use. For your questions: H&R Block and TaxSlayer both have accuracy guarantees that cover their online products, and they're more transparent about their terms. FreeTaxUSA has great customer service and a simpler fee structure without the constant upselling TurboTax does. As for transferring information, unfortunately there's no direct transfer from TurboTax to other platforms. You'll need to manually enter your information the first year you switch. However, you can reference your previous returns (keep PDF copies!) to make this easier, and after that first year, the new service will carry over your information year to year.

After spending 3 hours on hold with TurboTax last month trying to figure out why they weren't applying a credit I qualified for, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it literally saved my sanity. They have this amazing feature where they can scan your tax documents and previous returns to identify issues and guarantees that actually apply to your situation. I uploaded my returns and they immediately identified that TurboTax had missed a credit I was eligible for AND showed me exactly how their guarantee works (and doesn't work). The analysis also showed me I'd been overpaying for TurboTax features I didn't even need for years!

•How does taxr.ai work exactly? I'm curious but skeptical after being burned by TurboTax. Does it actually file your taxes or just review them? And do they have access to all your financial info if you upload documents?

•I'm wondering about security too. Uploading all my tax docs to yet another online service seems risky. What kind of guarantees do THEY have if something goes wrong?

•For the first question, taxr.ai doesn't file your taxes - it analyzes your documents and past returns to find errors, missed deductions, and helps interpret the fine print of services like TurboTax. Think of it as a second set of eyes that knows all the tax rules. It can identify if you're eligible for credits or deductions you missed. Regarding security, they use bank-level encryption and don't store your documents permanently. Your docs are analyzed and then automatically deleted after 30 days. They also have a pretty solid privacy policy that prohibits them from selling your data. I felt safer using them than giving my info to random tax prep people who might be seasonal workers.

I tried taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here, and I'm honestly shocked at what I found. I uploaded my returns from the last two years (both done with TurboTax) and the analysis showed I'd overpaid by $740 because TurboTax missed some deductions for my freelance work. The site pointed out exactly what was missed and showed me where in TurboTax's "guarantee" they avoid responsibility. I was able to file an amended return using their guidelines and just got confirmation it was accepted. Still waiting on the refund, but just knowing I wasn't losing my mind about TurboTax's misleading guarantees was worth it. Definitely switching tax services next year!

If you're still trying to get through to TurboTax customer service, use Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was in the same situation last year with their "guarantee" and spent days trying to get through their customer service queue. A friend recommended Claimyr and it was seriously life-changing. They basically hold your place in the phone queue and call you when a human actually answers. I watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and thought it was too good to be true, but it actually works. Got through to TurboTax in about 40 minutes instead of the 3+ hours I was spending on hold.

•Wait, how is this even possible? Do they use some kind of bot to stay on hold for you? I'm confused about how this works technically.

•Yeah right. Sounds like you work for this company. If it was actually possible to skip the wait times, everyone would be doing it and the companies would shut it down.

•They use a combination of technology that keeps your spot in the phone queue. It's not a bot - they actually call the company, navigate the phone tree for you, and then stay on hold so you don't have to. When a human representative finally answers, their system calls your phone and connects you directly to that rep. It's basically like having someone else do the waiting for you. No, I don't work for them lol. I was super skeptical too when my friend recommended it. Companies can't really shut it down because from their perspective, it's just a regular call coming in through their system. The only difference is you're not the one wasting hours of your life listening to their terrible hold music.

Ok I owe you all an apology, especially to profile 11. I tried Claimyr for reaching TurboTax about my missing state refund issue after sitting on hold for 2 hours yesterday and getting disconnected. It actually worked exactly like you said. I set it up, went to the gym, and got a call back when I was about halfway through my workout. Talked to an actual TurboTax supervisor (not just first-line support) who explained that my state refund was delayed because of a mismatch between my reported W-2 and what the state had on file. She helped me resolve it on the spot. Still think TurboTax's guarantee is BS, but at least I didn't waste another afternoon on hold!

Has anybody tried getting TurboTax to honor their guarantee by filing a complaint with the BBB or your state attorney general? I got them to refund my fees last year after they missed a major education credit. I had to threaten legal action, but they eventually gave in.

•This actually works. I filed a complaint with my state AG's office, and TurboTax contacted me within 3 days to "resolve the issue proactively." They refunded all my fees plus gave me a credit for next year (which I won't be using because I'm done with them).

•That's great to hear! I think the key is having documentation of their guarantee being shown during your tax filing process. I took screenshots of every page where they mentioned their guarantee and included those with my complaint. Makes it much harder for them to claim it doesn't apply. Also, mentioning specific consumer protection statutes in your state regarding false advertising can light a fire under them. They don't want to deal with state regulators looking too closely at their marketing practices.

The TurboTax satisfaction guarantee is only for their desktop software. I used to work for Intuit (not in tax stuff tho). Online products have different terms. Its in their fine print but they dont make it obvious.

•That should be illegal though, right? They can't advertise a guarantee prominently and then hide in fine print that it doesn't apply to their main product that most people use?

Has anyone tried Credit Karma Tax (now called Cash App Taxes)? It's completely free for federal and state filing. I switched from TurboTax last year and it was pretty good, handled my somewhat complicated return with no issues. No hidden fees or fake guarantees.

•I used it this year! It's definitely more basic than TurboTax but gets the job done. The interface isn't as polished but I saved like $120 and my refund was exactly the same as what TurboTax calculated when I did a comparison before submitting. Only downside is they don't support some more complex tax situations like multi-state filing or foreign income.
