Transcript Went from Funded to Unfunded with Zeros - SBBT Issue

Just checked my IRS transcript and wtf happened? Was showing funded status w/ all the correct amounts yesterday, now it's showing unfunded w/ all zeros across the board. Anyone else dealing w/ this SBBT nonsense? I've got investments to make with this refund $ and now idk what's going on. Has the IRS changed something in their system or is SBBT messing things up?

This is actually a common temporary glitch with Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (SBBT) when they're processing refunds. According to the IRS website FAQ section (https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-refund-processing), this typically happens during the final stages of processing when they're preparing to release your funds. The system sometimes shows zeros when transitioning between processing states. Most people report their transcripts updating again within 24-72 hours with the correct amounts and a proper funded status.

I had the exact same thing happen on March 17th this year. My transcript showed funded with the correct amount, then suddenly showed all zeros the next day. I was panicking because I had already mentally spent that refund money! But exactly 48 hours later on March 19th, the money hit my bank account even though the transcript still showed zeros. It took another day for the transcript to update correctly. I think it's just their system being weird during the final transfer process.

When this happened to me last month, I spent 3 hours trying to get through to the IRS (felt like trying to win concert tickets in the 90s, lol). Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 15 minutes. The agent confirmed it was just a processing status and that my refund was actually scheduled for direct deposit the next day - which is exactly what happened. Saved me days of anxiety wondering if my refund was cancelled or something.

Did you have to provide any personal information to this Claimyr service? I'm always skeptical about third-party services when dealing with tax matters. How does it actually work?

I'm pretty sure I would have lost my mind without something like this last year. I think I called the IRS like 30 times over two weeks and never got through. Anything that helps reach a human being is worth it at this point.

Thank you for sharing this. Been struggling to reach someone. Will try it. Appreciate the tip.

I've seen this happen to several people in my tax prep group! SBBT is a third-party processor that handles refunds when you've chosen to have your preparation fees taken out of your refund. They essentially act as a middleman. Your refund goes to them first, they take their cut, then pass the rest to you. This zero-out thing seems to happen right at the handoff point between IRS and SBBT. I was shocked when I learned how many steps are actually involved in the refund process - no wonder it gets glitchy sometimes!

I'm not sure if this is helpful, but... I had something similar happen and it turned out there was an offset I wasn't aware of. My transcript showed funded then suddenly zeroed out because my refund was being applied to a past student loan debt. I'm not saying that's what's happening to you, but it might be worth checking if you possibly have any federal debts that could cause an offset. The Treasury Offset Program can take your refund without much notice.

This is such an important point! The same thing happened to my cousin. He had no idea about an old debt and was completely blindsided when his refund disappeared. Definitely worth checking for any possible offsets.

Does anyone know how to check if you have an offset before filing? I'm in a similar situation and wondering if there's a way to know in advance rather than finding out after filing.

You need to call the Treasury Offset Program directly at 800-304-3107. You must have your SSN ready. They'll tell you immediately if you have any outstanding federal debts. Call ASAP if you suspect this might be your issue - waiting only delays resolution!

Back in 2022, I had this exact issue with SBBT. My transcript went from funded to zeros, and I freaked out. Called them directly (not the IRS) and they explained they were processing my refund that day. Money was in my account the next morning. Their customer service number is easier to reach than the IRS. Last year was much smoother though - no glitches at all with the same tax preparer.

Be careful with SBBT. I had a similar situation where my transcript zeroed out and it took exactly 9 days to resolve. The issue was that my bank rejected the initial deposit due to a name mismatch (married name vs maiden name). SBBT had to reprocess everything. If you don't see movement in 3-4 days, I'd recommend calling SBBT directly at their customer service line rather than the IRS. The IRS won't have visibility into SBBT's processing status once they've sent the money to SBBT.

Think of your tax refund like a package being shipped. It's left the IRS warehouse (funded status) and is now on the SBBT delivery truck (unfunded with zeros). The tracking system sometimes loses visibility during the handoff, but the package is still moving. You might want to check if you have the SBBT app - it sometimes shows more current status than the IRS transcript does. Also, check your bank account directly rather than relying on the transcript status.
