IRS Transcript Date Changed From 11/25/24 To 10/07/2024 With Code 290 After Amended Return - What Does This Mean For My Refund?
My transcript showed a date of 11/25/24 last week but now its showing an earlier date of 10/07/2024 (code 290 Additional tax assessed). Does this mean my refund is getting delayed again? Been waiting since February and I'm getting really nervous about these changing dates. I filed my return and it was processed on 02-19-2024 (code 150 Tax return filed). I initially received a refund on 02-22-2024 (code 846 Refund issued). But then I filed an amended return on 06-10-2024 (code 977 Amended return filed) which was forwarded for processing the same day (code 971). After that, they put a refund freeze on my account on 06-27-2024 (code 810 Refund freeze). I also see several credits to my account from 04-15-2024 (code 766) and my earned income credit was reduced or removed that same day (code 765). Now I'm seeing this additional tax assessed on 10-07-2024 (cycle 20243805, code 290). Last week my transcript showed 11/25/24 as a date but now that's gone and I'm just seeing this earlier October date. My tax period was for Dec. 31, 2023, and I filed as single. I had several dependents listed on my return. I've been waiting since February when I originally filed and I'm getting increasingly worried about these changing dates. Does this mean they're going to delay my refund even more?

Hey there! So when you see your transcript date move backwards, it usually means the IRS is doing some updates or verification on your account. This could actually be good news - often means they're actively working on your return. I've seen this pattern before and typically it resolves within 2-3 weeks. If you want a detailed analysis of your transcript and exactly what these date changes mean, I'd recommend checking out taxr.ai - it's this new AI tool that breaks down your entire transcript and explains all these weird date changes. It'll tell you exactly what's happening and when you can expect your refund.

This is actually pretty common with the IRS systems. Changing dates usually means theyre working on your return but its not necessarily bad news. Could be reviewing documents or processing updates.

The IRS transcript system isnt real time and dates can shift during processing cycles. Sometimes it means theyre verifying info, other times its just system updates. Best thing is to wait it out unless you get a actual notice from them.

I feel your pain! Been in a similar situation with my amended return. The date going backwards from 11/25 to 10/07 with that code 290 usually means they're reassessing additional tax, but it's not necessarily bad news. Sometimes the system updates dates as they work through different stages of review. Since you've been waiting since February, I'd give it another week or two before panicking. The fact that dates are changing means they're actively working on your case rather than it sitting in limbo. Keep checking your transcript every few days - you might see a DDD pop up soon! 🤞

•This is super helpful, thank you! @ac68532f8d25 Do you think the code 290 means they found an error or are they just double-checking everything? I'm trying not to stress but it's been almost a year since I originally filed 😭
