Code 290 Tax Assessment Dated 10/7/2024 After June Amended Return and Refund Freeze - What Does This Mean For My Frozen Refund?

I'm looking at my transcript and noticed a code 290 Additional tax assessed with a date of 10-07-2024 among other codes from earlier this year. The transcript shows the following codes: 977 Amended return filed 06-10-2024 43277-564-01625-4 810 Refund freeze 06-27-2024 766 Credit to your account 04-15-2024 765 Reduced or removed earned income credit 04-15-2024 766 Credit to your account 04-15-2024 290 Additional tax assessed 20243805 10-07-2024 33254-656-058491 Most of my other codes are from April and June, including those code 766 Credit to your account dated 04-15-2024, code 765 Reduced or removed earned income credit from 04-15-2024, and another 766 Credit dated 04-15-2024. I filed an amended return which shows up as code 977 Amended return filed from 06-10-2024, followed by a code 810 Refund freeze from 06-27-2024. But now this code 290 Additional tax assessed with cycle code 20243805 dated 10-07-2024 has appeared. Does anyone know what this October date means for my amended return? Why would there be an additional tax assessment scheduled for October when everything else is from earlier in the year? Is the IRS planning to assess additional tax based on my amendment? I'm concerned about what this means for my refund that's currently frozen.

Your transcript shows several key actions on your tax account throughout 2024. The sequence starts with two credits (code 766) and an Earned Income Credit adjustment (code 765) all dated April 15, 2024 - which is the standard tax filing deadline date. You then filed an amended return on June 10, 2024 (code 977), followed by the IRS placing a refund freeze (code 810) on June 27, 2024 - a standard procedure when processing amendments. The most recent code, 290 dated October 7, 2024, indicates an additional tax assessment that's scheduled to be processed. This future date represents when the IRS expects to complete processing your amended return. Each transaction has a unique reference number (like 43277-564-01625-4 for the amended return filing) for internal tracking purposes. This timeline suggests your amendment is currently under review, with the refund freeze protecting any potential adjustments until the final assessment in October. The October date isn't unusual - it's simply the IRS's projected completion date for processing your amendment, considering their current workload and processing times.

omg thank you! so i have to wait till october to see my refund? 😭

0 coins

Not necessarily. That's just the processing date. Your refund could come before then once they lift the 810 freeze.

Hey guys instead of playing detective with these codes, I started using taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when to expect your refund. Only costs $1 and saved me hours of research. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

I see you're dealing with the classic amended return waiting game! That code 290 with the October date is actually the IRS's projected processing date for your amendment - it's not set in stone. The good news is that once they finish reviewing your amended return, that 810 freeze should lift automatically. I've seen cases where people got their refunds weeks before the projected date shown in the 290 code. Keep checking your transcript weekly - you'll want to look for a code 846 (refund issued) or 971 (notice issued) which will give you more info about the final outcome. Hang in there, the wait is brutal but at least your case is moving through the system!

This is super helpful! I didn't know that 846 code meant refund issued - I'll definitely keep an eye out for that. Do you know if there's any way to tell from the transcript how much the refund might be? Or do I just have to wait and see? Really hoping it comes before October because I could really use that money right now 😩

The transcript codes can definitely be confusing! From what I can see, your situation is pretty standard for an amended return. That code 290 dated 10/7/24 is essentially the IRS saying "we plan to finish processing this by October" - but like others mentioned, it could happen sooner. The 810 freeze is just their way of making sure they don't send out the wrong refund amount while they're still reviewing your changes. I'd recommend checking your transcript every Friday (that's when they typically update) and calling the automated line at 1-800-829-1954 to check your refund status. The waiting sucks but your case is definitely in the system and moving forward!

Thanks for breaking this down! The Friday update schedule is really helpful to know - I've been checking randomly throughout the week. Quick question though - when you call that automated line, does it give you more detailed info than what shows on the transcript? Or is it basically the same information just in a different format? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth calling or if I should just stick to checking the transcript online.

The automated line usually just gives you the basic status like "your return is being processed" or "refund approved for X amount on Y date" - it's not more detailed than the transcript. The transcript actually shows way more info with all those specific codes. I'd stick with checking the transcript since you can see the full timeline and any new codes that pop up. Save yourself the phone time unless you specifically need to verify a refund amount or date!

Looking at your transcript timeline, I can see why you're confused about that October date! The sequence actually makes perfect sense though - your amended return (code 977) from June triggered the refund freeze (code 810), and now the IRS has scheduled the final processing for October 7th (code 290). That October date isn't when they'll START working on it, it's their target completion date. The good news is that 20243805 cycle code indicates this is moving through their system normally. I've seen plenty of cases where people got their refunds 2-4 weeks before the projected 290 date once the IRS finished their review. Keep watching for code 846 (refund issued) or any 971 codes (notices) - those will tell you when things are actually wrapping up. The wait is annoying but your case is definitely progressing!
