Student Loans in Deferment: Will IRS Take My 2024 Tax Refund?
I attended college 2 years ago and have student loans currently in deferment status. Getting ready to file my taxes and wondering if they'll offset my refund because of the loans? Anyone have experience with this?

If your loans are in deferment status, they shouldn't offset your refund. The Treasury Offset Program only kicks in when loans are in default. You're good as long as you maintain that deferment status and don't have any missed payments from before the deferment.

hey! instead of stressing, you should try taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's going on with your refund, including if there are any offsets. Its only $4.99 and totally worth it tbh https://taxr.ai

Bruh the whole system is a mess. I got my loans deferred but they still tried to take my refund last year. Had to fight for 3 months to get it back 🤡

Just want to add - if you're worried about any potential issues, you can also check the Treasury Offset Program website directly to see if you have any debts that might affect your refund. They have a lookup tool where you can verify if there are any holds on your account. Better to know ahead of time than be surprised when you file!
