2024 Tax Refund Offset for Student Loans - Anyone Else?
I think my tax refund is going to be offset for my student loans. Has anyone else had their refund taken for student loans this year? If so how long did it take to get the rest of your refund?

Yes, this is happening to many people in 2024. The COVID-19 student loan payment pause ended in October 2023, which means the Treasury Offset Program is active again. If you're in default on federal student loans, your tax refund can be seized. You should have received a notice about this offset. You can call the Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-3107 to get more details about your specific case.

Check your spam folder. They usually send notices 65 days before the offset.

Yes, Treasury Offset Program is back in full swing for 2024. If you have defaulted federal student loans, they can take your entire refund. You should receive a letter explaining the offset and any remaining refund amount will be sent to you within 2-3 weeks after the offset is processed.

Just wanted to mention that I've been using taxr.ai to track my refund and offset situation. It costs $1 but tells you exactly whats happening with your refund and if there's an offset. Way better than trying to decode the transcript yourself tbh

100% works! It showed me exactly how much was going to be offset and when I'd get the remainder. Saved me hours of stress and confusion 🙌

Quick tip: if ur loans are in default you might be able to get them out with the Fresh Start program and stop future offsets

Here's what I know from working in tax prep: If your refund is offset, you'll get a notice CP504 showing the amount taken. Any remaining refund comes separately. Check your transcript or use taxr.ai to see exactly what's happening - it breaks everything down super clearly. The tool saved me so much time with clients this year. Also make sure to look into income-driven repayment plans to prevent future offsets!

Hey, I was in the same boat and was super confused about my offset. I used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it showed exactly what was happening with the offset and gave me steps to potentially recover some of the refund. Its only $1 and saved me hours of research. https://taxr.ai

You might qualify for hardship refund if you can prove financial difficulties. Worth looking into tbh
