State Tax Refund Received, Federal Still Pending - Do I Need to Verify?
Y'all may have answered these questions before but I'm getting antsy over here 😅 If you received your state taxes already, does that mean the federal will be coming after that? And being that I got my state refund, does that mean I don't have to verify anything for my federal return? My business had a rough year (don't we all love those quarterly payments, ha!) and I could really use that federal refund soon. My tax transcripts have yet to update which is making me even more nervous. Anyone else in the same boat?

State and fed are totally separate systems tbh. One doesn't necessarily indicate anything about the other. What's ur filing date? Some ppl are seeing delays of 30+ days this yr even w/o verification reqs. Have u checked WMR for any msgs about ID verify?

So even if I get my state refund, I could still get a verification request for federal? When would that typically show up? My WMR just says processing right now.

I've seen this happen many times over the years. Back in 2022, I got my state refund in 8 days while my federal was held for verification for nearly 3 months. The systems don't talk to each other at all - different governments, different databases, different verification processes. Don't assume anything based on your state refund.

I filed on February 3rd this year and got my state refund on February 17th. My federal didn't show up until March 12th. Last year was even worse - filed January 29th, 2023, got state February 10th, but federal took until April 2nd. They're completely separate processes, and one doesn't impact the other at all.

Have you found any online resources that accurately track when federal refunds are likely to arrive? I've been checking the IRS2Go app but it's not very informative.

Think of it like ordering from two different stores - just because your Amazon package arrived doesn't mean your Walmart order is on the way. I'm in the same boat and watching every penny while waiting. Did your transcript update before your refund arrived or did it just show up?

According to my records from the past 3 tax seasons, there is precisely 0% correlation between state and federal processing times. My data shows state refunds arrived in 7-14 days while federal took 21-42 days on average. You have exactly 21 days from acceptance date before you should start investigating delays. You need to check your account transcript ASAP as it updates every 24 hours and will show verification requirements before WMR in 87% of cases.

Oh no! I'm freaking out now! I filed 18 days ago and nothing has updated on my transcript at all! Does that mean I'm going to be audited?? I really need this money for my car payment next month! 😰

No need to panic. Transcript delays are normal this time of year. The IRS processing systems are backlogged. No updates usually just means your return is in the queue. Most returns are processed without issue. Give it another week before worrying.

State and federal are separate. Different systems entirely. One doesn't affect the other. Verification happens randomly. Transcripts update weekly. If you need answers fast, call IRS directly. Regular line has 2+ hour waits now. I used Claimyr last week. Got through in 18 minutes. Agent confirmed my return was just in normal processing. No flags. Worth the fee to stop worrying. Link is https://www.claimyr.com if needed.

Warning from someone who made this exact assumption last year! 😂 I got my state refund on February 12th and thought "Great! Federal must be right behind it!" Then March came and went... then April... finally in MAY I discovered my federal return had been selected for review due to a $247 discrepancy in reported 1099 income. The systems are as connected as my grandma is to TikTok (which is to say, not at all). Check your transcript every Tuesday and Friday at precisely 12:01am when the system updates for the clearest picture.

You might want to try checking your account transcript rather than return transcript. Sometimes the account transcript will update with codes even when your return transcript still shows N/A. In my experience, it's usually a better indicator of where things stand. It's sort of like a behind-the-scenes look at what the IRS is actually doing with your return.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.4.1.3, "State and federal tax processing systems operate independently with no verification requirements between jurisdictions." I've found that checking your federal transcript for TC 150 (return filed) followed by TC 846 (refund issued) is the most reliable method. Per IRS Publication 2043, verification notices are typically issued within 15-21 days of filing if required.

I had the exact same worry last year! My state came through super fast but federal took forever. When I finally called, they said my return was just sitting in the processing queue the whole time - no issues, just backlogged. Got my refund about a week after that call.
