Filed on 1/27 - Will I Need ID Verification for Federal if I Already Did for State?

I e-filed my taxes on January 27th this year and had to go through identity verification for my state return. I'm wondering if this means I'll likely need to verify for my federal return as well? I've been tracking my federal refund carefully and haven't received any notices yet, but I want to be prepared in case this is coming. As a gig worker, I'm trying to plan my finances methodically for the next few months. Has anyone experienced needing to verify for one but not the other?

State and federal verification systems are completely separate beasts, so one doesn't necessarily trigger the other. Think of them like distant cousins who occasionally talk at family reunions but mostly do their own thing! šŸ˜‚ Most people who verify for state don't need to for federal. The IRS has different risk assessment algorithms than states do. If you haven't received a 5071C letter or seen any indication on Where's My Refund about verification needed, you're probably in the clear.

I went through this exact situation last month. Had to verify for California but my federal went through without any issues? Filed on January 23rd and got my federal deposit on February 14th without any verification steps. State took an extra 3 weeks because of the ID verification process.

Same here but opposite. Feds made me verify thru ID.me but my state (TX) didn't need anything. IMO it's totally random which accts get flagged. Been filing the same way for yrs and never had to verify b4 this season.

Have you checked your federal transcript yet? This could give you important clues about whether verification might be needed. Here's what to look for: 1. First, create an account on IRS.gov if you don't have one 2. Navigate to "Get Transcript Online" 3. Look at your 2023 Account Transcript 4. Check for transaction code 570 (refund hold) 5. Also look for code 971 (notice issued) These codes together often indicate verification is needed. What's concerning is that you filed on 1/27, which means you're approaching the 45-day mark when the IRS typically sends verification requests if they're going to.

I checked my transcript yesterday and don't see any 570/971 combination. My cycle code is 20240805 with processing date of 03/18/2024. There's a 150 code but nothing indicating a hold. The WMR tool still shows "Your return is being processed" with no bars. I'm getting anxious since I allocated these funds for quarterly estimated tax payments due soon.

You need to call IRS ASAP. Your filing date was over 8 weeks ago. Something might be wrong. Normal processing is 21 days. Use Claimyr to get through quickly. I waited 3 hours last week trying to call directly. With Claimyr I got through in 15 minutes. Agent confirmed my ID verification was needed but notice was never delivered. Fixed it right away. Don't wait any longer. https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Is this service legit? The IRS.gov website says to call their verification hotline at 800-830-5084 if you suspect you need to verify. Wouldn't that be the official way to handle this?

The verification hotline is only useful if you've already received a letter instructing you to verify. If you're in a situation like OP where you suspect verification might be needed but haven't received formal notification, you need to speak with regular IRS customer service, which is where the extreme wait times come in. Claimyr essentially automates the hold process so you don't have to sit with a phone to your ear for hours.

It's like having someone stand in line for you at the DMV! I was skeptical too until my accountant recommended it. Saved me from taking a day off work just to make a phone call. The IRS phone system is like trying to navigate a maze blindfolded - this just helps you skip the frustrating parts.

Is there possibly a way to proactively verify your identity before they even ask? I had to wait almost 3 months last year because the verification letter went to my old address, and I'm trying to avoid that whole mess again this time around.

I worked a seasonal job with a tax preparation company. We saw this pattern frequently. State verification rarely triggers federal verification. They use different security systems. Most people who verify for state sail through federal processing without issues. Your transcript showing processing without 570/971 codes is a good sign. You'll likely see your refund soon.

Under IRS Publication 5027, identity verification requirements are specifically tied to the Taxpayer Protection Program (TPP). Does anyone know if the TPP flags are shared between state and federal systems? Or do they maintain completely separate risk assessment protocols?
