Sent IRS amendment, need extension ASAP. Stuck on hold forever. Help!

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I just mailed my amendment to the IRS and now I need an extension. I tried calling them but got stuck on hold forever until the call dropped. Anyone else dealing with this? Any advice on how to actually get through to a human at the IRS?

Ugh, the IRS phone system is a nightmare. I've been trying to get through for weeks. It's like they don't want us to actually talk to anyone. 🙄

For real tho. Its like they purposely make it impossible to reach them. I swear they enjoy watching us suffer 😤

I heard if you call right when they open, you have a better chance of getting through. Might be worth a shot?

Tried that already. No luck. 😩 Maybe I'll try calling at 11:59 PM and see if anyone picks up lol

I found a method that actually works to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The government should make this easier for free.

I get the skepticism, but after wasting hours on hold, $20 was worth it for me. Saved me a ton of time and stress.

How long did it take for them to actually connect you with someone?

It took about 2 hours, but I didn't have to sit there listening to that awful hold music. They just called me when an agent was ready.

Have you tried faxing your extension request? Sometimes that's faster than snail mail or calling.

Listen up, cause I've been down this road before. Here's what you need to do: 1. Don't panic. The IRS is slow, but they'll process your amendment eventually. 2. File Form 4868 for an automatic 6-month extension if you haven't already. 3. Keep trying the IRS phone number, but use the trick of calling early in the morning or late in the day. 4. Document everything. Keep copies of your amendment and proof of mailing. 5. If you owe money, pay as much as you can now to avoid penalties. 6. Check the IRS website for processing times. Amendments can take up to 16 weeks. 7. Consider using a tax advocate service if you're really stuck. Remember, patience is key here. The IRS is understaffed and overworked, especially after COVID. Hang in there!

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response! I'll definitely follow these steps. Quick question - do you know if I need to file the extension even if I've already sent in the amendment?

Good question! If you've already filed your original return and are just waiting on the amendment to be processed, you don't need to file an extension. The extension is only for your original return filing.

For real. In other countries, the government just sends you a bill. Why can't we have that?

Have you tried reaching out to your local congressperson's office? Sometimes they can help expedite IRS issues.

I hadn't even thought of that! Do you know how I would go about contacting them?

Just google your district's representative and look for a 'constituent services' section on their website. They usually have a form you can fill out explaining your issue.

Thanks! I'll give that a shot if I can't get through to the IRS soon.
