SBTPG Has My Refund - How Long Until Chime Releases It?

If SBTPG already received my tax refund, how long until they release the funds? • I bank with Chime • My DDD is 2/24 • Transcript shows refund sent • SBTPG website shows they have it • Still nothing in my account Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Anyone else experiencing delays with SBTPG this tax season?

Mateo Martinez

SBTPG typically processes refunds within 24-48 hours after receiving them from the IRS. I've seen this timing fluctuate during peak tax season, especially with online banks like Chime. Last year, my refund sat at SBTPG for almost 36 hours before hitting my account, despite my transcript showing the funds were sent. The delay is concerning but not unusual - they're essentially holding your money while they deduct any filing fees you agreed to when using tax preparation software.

I had exactly the same situation last week. SBTPG received my funds at 9:24am on Tuesday, and Chime deposited them at 2:17pm on Wednesday - so precisely 28 hours and 53 minutes of waiting. It's frustrating to know they're sitting on your money, but it did come through eventually.

Can SBTPG hold it longer? I'm worried. My DDD was yesterday. Still nothing. Called them twice. No help.

Have you checked if you had any fees taken out of your refund? I'm SO tired of seeing people get confused by this! If you paid for tax preparation through your refund, SBTPG has to process those payments before releasing your money. Also, did your tax preparer include the Refund Transfer option? That adds another layer of processing time.

This happened to me last year! I didn't realize I had agreed to the Refund Transfer option when I filed. My preparer took $39.95 for the "convenience" of getting my refund after paying for filing with my refund. SBTPG held my money for almost 3 days before releasing it to my bank. It was super frustrating watching my money just sit there on their website.

The process follows a specific timeline: IRS issues Direct Deposit Date (DDD) → funds transfer to SBTPG → SBTPG processes fee deductions → SBTPG initiates ACH transfer to your bank → Chime processes the deposit. With your DDD of 2/24, SBTPG typically requires 24-48 business hours for processing. Since today is a business day, you should see the deposit by end of day tomorrow at the latest. The SBTPG portal status "funds received" confirms you're in the final stage of processing.

Is there any way to expedite this process? Seems like they're just sitting on our money to earn interest. Can't we opt out of using SBTPG after we've already filed?

I called SBTPG on February 12th about this exact issue. They confirmed they hold funds for 1-2 business days for "processing" but wouldn't tell me why it takes so long. Their representative admitted they can see the money in their system but have an internal workflow that prevents immediate release. So frustrating!

Waiting for SBTPG is like watching water boil - feels like forever when you need that money! After waiting 3 days with my refund stuck in SBTPG limbo, I was desperate and called the IRS to see if they could help. Spent 2 hours trying to get through their phone tree before giving up. Then I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes. The agent explained that once the IRS sends it to SBTPG, it's out of their hands, but at least I got a clear answer instead of more waiting. It's like having a fast-pass at a theme park instead of standing in the regular line all day.

I'm not sure calling the IRS would help with this situation though... Once the money is with SBTPG, isn't it completely out of the IRS's control? Did the agent provide any actual assistance or just confirm what you already knew? I'm wondering if it's worth the cost of using a service when SBTPG is the one holding the funds.

Tbh I don't think SBTPG is being straight w/ us. My refund hit SBTPG on Tues morning and they didn't release til Thurs afternoon. That's way longer than the 24hrs they claim. IMO they're holding our $$ to make interest. Next yr I'm def not paying fees from my refund - gonna pay upfront so I can avoid SBTPG completely.

Has anyone actually received their money faster from SBTPG? I keep seeing complaints but wonder if there are success stories too. I've been looking at their BBB page and the complaints are pretty consistent about the delays. But are these just the vocal minority?
