Received federal tax refund but still waiting on Indiana state refund - timeline?
Got my federal tax refund deposited five days ago, but still nothing from Indiana state. I e-filed both together through TurboTax back in early April. The IRS Where's My Refund tool showed my federal was processed pretty quickly, but the Indiana website just says "processing" when I check. Anyone else from Indiana in the same situation? How long did you have to wait after getting your federal before state came through?

This is completely normal. State refunds almost always come after federal, and they usually take longer to process. The timeframe varies by state, but for Indiana specifically, even though they claim a 10-14 day processing time for e-filed returns, it's more realistically 3-4 weeks right now due to additional verification procedures they implemented this year to combat fraud. They're prioritizing refunds with the Earned Income Credit first, then moving through others. You can check your status at https://intime.dor.in.gov/ but be aware the status won't change much until it's actually approved. If it's been more than 5 weeks, then you might want to call their taxpayer services division at 317-232-2240.

•Thank you, I really appreciate the detailed info! Just checked that site and mine still says "in review" so I guess I just need to be patient. It's been a little over 3 weeks now.

•Ugh, I've been waiting for 7 weeks for my Indiana refund. Called the number and they basically just said "it's processing" and couldn't tell me anything else. Super frustrating.

•Is it true that they prioritize returns claiming EITC? I don't claim it but my neighbor does and she got her Indiana refund in like 2 weeks.

•Yes, EITC returns are typically prioritized - it's a policy to get money back faster to lower-income households. Also, returns with no flags or complications get processed faster, regardless of when they were filed.

If your trying to understand what's going on with your refund, you NEED to use taxr.ai - it's absolutely the best tool I've ever used to make sense of tax stuff. I was in a similar situation with delayed refunds and couldn't make heads or tails of my transcript. This tool explained everything to me in plain English and showed exactly where things were in the process. Honestly wish I'd found it sooner instead of wasting hours on those frustrating government websites! https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does WAY more than just read transcripts! It analyzes your entire tax situation, explains all those weird codes and dates, tells you if there are any issues that might delay your refund, and even gives you a timeline estimate based on what it finds. I was about to pull my hair out trying to figure out why my refund was delayed until I used it. SERIOUSLY LIFE CHANGING.

•Not a scam at all! It's just a tool that makes the IRS stuff understandable. Like having a tax pro translate everything but without paying hundreds of dollars for a consultation. It saved me weeks of stress and confusion. I literally tell everyone I know about it now because tax season doesn't have to be so painful!

After waiting for 3 weeks for my Indiana refund and getting nowhere with the website, I finally got through to a real person at the Indiana DOR using claimyr.com and it was honestly the best decision I made! Instead of waiting on hold for hours, I got a callback within 45 minutes and the agent helped me understand exactly why my refund was delayed (some identity verification issue). Got it resolved right away and refund came 3 days later! Worth every penny just to avoid the hold music alone lol.

•Hmm another app asking for money to do something that should be free? How much did they charge you?

•I get your skepticism, but after spending literally 4 hours on hold across 3 different days and never reaching anyone, this was a lifesaver. I'd rather spend a little money than waste another entire day. And honestly, the relief of finally getting answers and having my refund released was priceless.

•does this actually work? i've been on hold with indiana DOR like 5 times now and keep getting disconnected 😡

•100% worked for me. I was in the exact same boat - kept getting disconnected or stuck in the queue. With the callback I actually got someone who knew what they were talking about and could access my file directly.

I'm in Indiana too. Got my federal return on May 2nd and finally got my state refund yesterday (May 20th). So it was about 2.5 weeks difference. Hang in there!

This happens every year and ppl act surprised every time 😂. States are always slower than federal. That's just how it is. I'm in Illinois and it took me almost 2 months to get my state refund after getting federal. Indiana is actually usually faster than most.

I filed in early March and got both my Federal and Indiana refunds within 10 days of each other. Federal came first then state about a week later. Did you file anything unusual or have any special circumstances? Self employment? Multiple states? Those tend to slow things down.

•Nope, pretty straightforward W-2 income, standard deduction. No rental income or anything complicated. That's why I'm confused about the delay.

•Might just be bad luck with timing then. They seem to go in waves from what I've seen in past years. One week they're super efficient, next week they're backed up.

Indiana resident here - they're taking FOREVER this year. I filed in February, got federal in 8 days but just got my state refund last week. Almost 3 months wait! The DOR told me they're doing more manual reviews this year because of increased fraud. So if your return got flagged for manual review (which seems random), expect a looooong wait.

FYI there was an article in the Indianapolis Star last month saying Indiana implemented new verification steps this year that are slowing things down. They're supposedly prioritizing returns with dependents and EITC claims, so if you don't have either, you might be waiting longer.

•I tried to find it again but cant seem to. It was from sometime in April I think. The gist was just that they added more fraud protection measures after some issues last year.

Last year I waited 4 months for my indiana refund!!! Called multiple times and got nowhere. This year I used taxr.ai to help me understand what was happening with my returns and it was a game changer. I could actually see what stage everything was at and what the hold up was. Turns out I had a name mismatch that needed fixing. https://taxr.ai seriously saved me so much time and frustration.

•Not an ad, just someone who wasted months of my life last year being confused and stressed about my refund. This tool actually helped me understand what was happening instead of the useless status bars on the govt websites that tell you nothing. But whatever, stay confused I guess 🤷♀️

I work in tax prep (not in Indiana tho) and we're seeing longer processing times across most states this year. COVID backlog + increased fraud prevention + staffing issues = slow refunds. Just keep checking the IN portal every few days. As long as it says processing and not some other status, you should be good.

Checked my calendar - filed Feb 19, got Federal March 3, Indiana April 7. So more than a month between them. They're definitely slower this year.

i had EXACTLY the same issue! waiting foreeeever for my indiana refund after getting federal quick. tried calling literally 15+ times and couldn't get through. used claimyr.com to get a callback and found out my return was stuck in review because of some address verification thing. agent fixed it right on the call and my refund hit my account three days later. talking to an agent got my refund released so fast instead of just sitting there for who knows how long!

When did you file? I'm also in Indiana and I filed late (April 10th) and actually got my state refund before federal which was super weird. State took about 3 weeks. Maybe they're processing in a weird order this year?

•Filed the first week of April, so around the 3rd I think. That's strange you got state first! I didn't think that ever happened.

I used to work for the Indiana DOR (quit last year). They're absolutely swamped right now and the computer systems are from the stone age. They prioritize processing refunds in this order: 1) returns with EITC 2) simple returns with direct deposit 3) returns with complicated schedules 4) returns with paper checks. So where you fall in that queue makes a huge difference.

•Ok insider info!! 👀 Is there anything that can speed up the process or are we just at the mercy of the system?

•Honestly once its in the system there's not much you can do but wait. If you're at 6+ weeks though, calling can sometimes help - especially if your return is stuck in verification. The phone agents can sometimes push it through if everything looks good.

Check if you have access to your tax transcript through the IRS website. Might give you more info on what's happening with your refund than the standard "where's my refund" tool. And fwiw I'm in Ohio and my state refund took almost 6 weeks after my federal this year.

•True but sometimes if there's an issue with your federal it could affect state processing too. Worth checking both.

•Transcripts are so confusing though! I was looking at mine and had no idea what all those codes meant. Ended up using taxr.ai to explain it all to me and it was super helpful. Apparently I had an exam code I didn't even know about.

Indiana resident here - I totally understand your frustration! I'm actually in a similar boat. Filed in early April, got my federal refund about 10 days ago, but still waiting on state. From what I've been reading and hearing from others, Indiana seems to be running about 3-4 weeks behind federal this year due to additional fraud prevention measures they implemented. The "processing" status on their website doesn't really tell us much unfortunately. I've been checking the Indiana DOR site every few days but it hasn't changed from "in review" for the past 2 weeks. Sounds like we just need to hang tight - based on what others are saying here, it seems like most people are eventually getting their refunds, just with longer wait times than usual. Hopefully ours come through soon!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's actually kind of reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with this. The "processing" and "in review" statuses are so vague - I wish they would give us more specific information about what's actually happening. I'm at about 3.5 weeks now since getting my federal, so hopefully mine will come through soon too. Did you try calling their customer service line or are you just waiting it out?

•I tried calling twice but couldn't get through - just got stuck in their phone queue both times and eventually gave up after waiting over an hour. Honestly at this point I'm just trying to be patient and wait it out. From what everyone else is saying here, it sounds like most people are getting their refunds eventually, just with these longer processing times. The fraud prevention measures they added this year seem to be the main culprit. I figure as long as the status isn't showing any errors, we should be okay. Just frustrating having to wait so long when you're expecting that money!

I'm in the same exact situation! Filed through TurboTax in early April, got my federal refund last week, but Indiana is still showing "processing" on their website. It's really frustrating not knowing when to expect it, especially when you're counting on that money. Based on what everyone is saying here, it sounds like 3-4 weeks after federal is pretty normal for Indiana this year due to their new fraud prevention measures. I'm trying to be patient but it's hard when the status updates are so vague. Hopefully we'll both see movement soon!

•I'm going through the exact same thing! Filed in early April, got federal about a week ago, and Indiana is still stuck on "processing." It's so frustrating when you need that money for bills or other expenses. From reading through all these comments, it seems like the 3-4 week delay after federal is unfortunately the new normal for Indiana this year. At least we're not alone in this - sounds like tons of people are experiencing the same delays. I'm trying to just check the website once a week now instead of obsessively checking daily since it doesn't seem to update much anyway. Fingers crossed we both see some movement soon!

I'm experiencing the exact same thing! Filed my taxes through TurboTax in early April, received my federal refund about a week ago, but my Indiana state refund is still showing "processing" on their website. It's reassuring to read through all these comments and see that so many others are dealing with similar delays - at least we know we're not alone in this situation. From what everyone is sharing here, it sounds like Indiana has implemented additional fraud prevention measures this year that are causing these 3-4 week delays after receiving federal refunds. The waiting is definitely frustrating, especially when you're counting on that money, but it seems like most people are eventually getting their refunds processed. I'm going to try to be more patient and maybe check the status less frequently since it doesn't seem to update very often anyway. Thanks for posting this question - it's really helpful to hear everyone's experiences and timelines!
