PATH Act Return: Will I get my refund exactly on Feb 15th or later?

My refund is being held due to PATH act. Everyone keeps saying February 15th is the magic date but im confused if that means we get our refunds that exact day or if thats just when they start processing them. Anyone know for sure?

Tax professional here - the February 15th date is when the IRS begins processing PATH Act returns. It's not a guaranteed deposit date. Most PATH Act refunds start hitting bank accounts between Feb 20-27th, depending on your bank's processing time and the complexity of your return.

do you know if having additional credits besides EIC affects the timeline?

Yes, additional credits can extend processing time, especially if you claimed CTC or ACTC

Here's what actually happens with PATH Act returns - speaking from 12 years tax experience. The Feb 15 date is when processing BEGINS. The IRS system runs multiple verification checks that typically take 3-5 business days. Then they generate the refund approval which takes another 1-2 days. After that, it goes to the Financial Management Service for actual payment processing which is another 2-3 days. Add your bank processing time (1-5 days depending on institution) and that's why most people see deposits between Feb 20-27. If you want the exact timeline for your specific return, I highly recommend using taxr.ai - it's been incredibly accurate for all my clients this season. The AI breaks down your transcript and gives you precise dates rather than these general windows I'm mentioning.
