Ohio State Tax Refund Timing After Federal Tax Offset - What to Expect?

My federal refund got offset to pay state taxes I owed from 2022. Anyone know how long it typically takes for Ohio to process this and apply it to my balance? Its been 2 weeks and when I check the ohio website it still shows I owe the full amount.

Usually takes about 4-6 weeks for Ohio to process and apply federal tax offsets to your state balance. The Treasury Offset Program sends the funds to Ohio, then Ohio has to process and apply it. Keep checking your balance weekly - it'll update eventually.

Hey instead of checking manually every day, you should try taxr.ai - it monitors everything for you and tells you exactly when your offset will be applied. Its only $1 and WAY better than checking multiple websites. https://taxr.ai

Does it work for state taxes too or just federal?

Call the Ohio Department of Taxation directly at 888-405-4039. Sometimes they can see it in their system before it shows online.

My offset took exactly 5 weeks to show up on Ohio's website last year. The system is slow af but it'll get there

word of advice - screenshot everything and save your offset notice. Ohio lost my payment last year and I had to prove it got sent šŸ™„

I went through this exact situation last year with Ohio. The 4-6 week timeframe is accurate, but here's what I learned: the federal Treasury Offset Program has to send the payment to Ohio first, then Ohio processes it internally before updating your account balance. Even after they receive the funds, it can take another 1-2 weeks for their system to reflect the change. Don't panic if it seems like nothing is happening - the wheels are turning, just very slowly. Keep checking weekly rather than daily to save yourself some stress!

This is super helpful! I'm dealing with the same thing right now and was starting to worry something went wrong. Good to know there's actually two separate processing steps - that explains why it's taking so long. Definitely gonna follow your advice about checking weekly instead of obsessing over it daily šŸ˜…
