State refund offset shows full amount taken but I only owe $500 - Will it adjust?
My state tax refund got offset for debt collection but theres something weird going on. The offset is showing they took my entire refund (over 2k) but I know I only owe about 500 on an old debt. Nothing else shows up when I check my credit report or collection notices. Anyone deal with this before? Will they adjust and send the difference back?

Yes, they will adjust it and refund the difference. The initial hold is usually for the full amount while they process everything. Once they verify the exact debt amount, they'll release the excess back to you. Usually takes 2-3 weeks after the offset for the adjustment to process.

Hey, if you want to know exactly whats going on with your refund, check out taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you everything about your refund status, including offsets. Its only $1 and way better than trying to piece everything together yourself. https://taxr.ai

•Yeah its legit! Just upload your transcript and it breaks down everything - even predicts when youll get your refund. Saved me hours of googling

make sure u call the treasury offset number (1-800-304-3107) to double check all your debts. sometimes they miss stuff when u look online

Document everything! Take screenshots of your debt amounts and keep records. Had to fight for 3 months to get my excess refund back last year because of 'processing errors' smh

protip: call your state tax agency directly, not the irs. theyre usually more helpful with state refund issues tbh
