Need help understanding what an IP PIN is and how to get one for e-filing
I keep hearing about IP PINs for filing taxes but I'm confused about what it actually is. Do I need one to file? How do I even get it? The IRS website is so confusing and I don't want to mess anything up.

IP PIN is basically a 6-digit number that helps prevent tax fraud. Its like a special password between you and the IRS. If you've been a victim of identity theft, you definitely need one. Otherwise its optional but recommended. You can get it through irs.gov but heads up - their identity verification is pretty strict.

IMPORTANT: If you get an IP PIN, dont lose it! I lost mine and had to paper file which took forever to process. Write it down somewhere safe!

FYI - you can also get one by making an appointment at your local IRS office if the online stuff isnt working for you. Just bring 2 forms of ID
