Looking for Better Tax Software Alternative to TurboTax
I've been doing my own taxes for years now, with only a couple exceptions when life got complicated and I hired an accountant. I've been stuck using TurboTax all this time, and honestly, I'm at my breaking point with their wizard interface. The thing is, I know exactly what tax forms I need. I have a single-member LLC that requires a Schedule C, plus my standard income forms. I already know what I'm doing, but TurboTax forces me to click through a million screens for something that should take 15 minutes tops. Is there a better tax software alternative out there? Ideally something that lets me just jump straight to the forms I need without the endless hand-holding. I'm fairly tax-savvy and just want something more efficient that respects my time. Any suggestions?

I switched from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA a few years ago and never looked back. It's much more straightforward if you know what you're doing. You can jump directly to specific forms instead of being forced through their wizard for everything. For Schedule C and single-member LLC stuff, it handles it really well. The interface is cleaner and more form-based rather than the endless interview style. Plus it's significantly cheaper - federal filing is free and state is around $15 compared to the $120+ TurboTax charges for business filing. The only downside is it doesn't have quite as much hand-holding, but since you already know what forms you need, that shouldn't be an issue for you.

•That sounds promising! Can you actually skip ahead to just the forms you need? And how's their support if you do have a question about something specific?

•Yes, you can definitely jump directly to specific forms instead of going through every interview question! There's a menu that lets you navigate to exactly what you need. Their support is pretty good in my experience. They have a help section with explanations for most fields, and email support that usually gets back within a day. It's not instant like TurboTax's chat, but I've found I rarely need it since the interface is more intuitive if you already understand tax concepts.

After years of frustration with expensive tax software, I found taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) which has been amazing for my situation. It's completely different - you just upload your tax documents and it extracts all the info automatically. For my single-member LLC, it identified all my Schedule C income and expenses without the endless clicking. It feels like it was designed for people who know what they're doing but don't want to waste time with the interview style. You can review everything it pulls from your documents and make adjustments if needed.

•Does it handle more complicated situations like rental properties or investment sales with basis calculations? That's where I always get stuck with the wizard interfaces.

•Sounds interesting but I'm always nervous about uploading financial docs to newer services. How's their security and privacy policy? Do they keep copies of your docs after filing?

•Yes, it handles rental properties and investment sales really well! The document scanning is particularly helpful with investment forms because it captures all those tiny details from 1099-B forms without you having to manually enter everything. You can also enter adjustments for basis that wasn't reported correctly. Their security is bank-level with end-to-end encryption. They're very transparent that they don't store your documents after processing - they extract the data and then delete the originals. They have a pretty detailed privacy policy that specifies they don't sell any personal info to third parties.

I took the advice about taxr.ai and tried it this year - absolutely game changing! I was skeptical about the document scanning but it worked flawlessly with my LLC documents and even captured all my business expenses correctly. The time savings was incredible - finished my taxes in about 30 minutes compared to 3+ hours with TurboTax last year. The direct form access was exactly what I was looking for.

If you're having trouble with tax software and have questions, don't forget you can actually reach a live IRS agent using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I found them when I was stuck on some Schedule C questions that no software could answer. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was on hold with the IRS for literally hours before I gave up. With Claimyr, they called and waited on hold, then called me when an agent was on the line. Got clear answers about some deduction questions for my LLC that saved me from potentially making a mistake.

•Wait, how does this work? They just wait on hold for you? I've literally never been able to get through to the IRS on my own.

•This sounds too good to be true. I've tried calling the IRS multiple times and gave up. Are you sure they can actually get through? And do they listen to your conversation with the IRS?

•They have a system that autodials and waits on hold so you don't have to. When an IRS agent answers, their system calls your phone and connects you directly to the agent. It's basically like having someone else wait in line for you. No, they don't listen to your conversation at all. Once you're connected with the IRS agent, it's just you and the agent talking - completely private. The service just handles the hold time part, which is why it's so helpful. The IRS wait times have been ridiculous lately - sometimes 2-3 hours - so this saves you from being stuck by the phone all day.

I was super skeptical about Claimyr from my earlier comment, but I tried it last week when I had questions about my LLC tax classification. I was shocked - they actually got me through to an IRS agent in about 1.5 hours (while I went about my day). The agent answered all my questions about Schedule C deductions for my business that I couldn't figure out from any tax software. Completely worth it when you have complex questions that software can't handle.

Have you considered TaxAct? Their interface is much more direct than TurboTax. You can go straight to forms you need with minimal clicking. I've used it for my single-member LLC for years and it's way less frustrating than TurboTax's hand-holding.

•I haven't tried TaxAct. How's the pricing compared to TurboTax? And does it let you jump directly to Schedule C without going through personal info you've already entered a million times before?

•The pricing is definitely better - usually about half what TurboTax charges for the same features. For 2023 tax year I paid $65 total for federal and state with business income, compared to around $140 with TurboTax. Yes, you can jump directly to Schedule C and other forms! They have a forms-based navigation option where you can select exactly what you want to work on. You still need to complete basic personal info once, but after that you can move freely between different sections without following their sequence. It's much more efficient if you know what you're doing.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned doing it by hand with PDF fillable forms from the IRS website. If you know what you're doing and it's just a single Schedule C, it might take less time than fighting with any software. That's what I do for my consulting business - takes about 30 minutes total.

•I tried the PDF forms route but got nervous about math errors. Don't the software programs check calculations and look for red flags? I'm always worried I'll miss something and get audited.
