What are the best e-filing options for complex tax situations? (2025 filing season)

Getting frustrated with my tax situation here in California and wondering what e-filing options people recommend. I've basically got my 2024 taxes prepared already but just waiting on a few more forms to finalize everything. My situation is a bit complicated - I don't qualify for IRS Free File and apparently some of the forms I need aren't supported by the Free File Fillable Forms system yet. Super annoying! I tried calling about 15 local tax pros from the IRS authorized e-file provider list, but none will just file my taxes - they all want to charge me like $2,000 to prepare them too, which is ridiculous since I've already done the work. Seems like commercial tax software is my only option at this point. I've been using TurboTax forever, but man it drives me crazy how it forces you through their stupid interview process. And if you make any mistakes (or encounter TurboTax bugs), you have to go through their entire wizard again to fix them. I literally swear at my computer and my blood pressure shoots up every time. And paying over $100 for this awful experience? Come on. What I really want is a commercial solution where I can just specify which forms I need up front and fill them out directly without the forced interview process. Does anything like this exist? Any recommendations that won't make me lose my mind?

I feel your pain! I've been preparing taxes for clients for years, and even I get frustrated with some of these systems. For what you're looking for, I'd recommend TaxAct Professional or TaxSlayer Pro. Both allow you to select the forms you need and fill them out directly rather than forcing you through an interview process. They have what's called "forms-based" preparation options in addition to the guided interview. FreeTaxUSA also has a decent interface that gives you more control while being significantly cheaper than TurboTax, though it still uses somewhat of a guided approach. Their deluxe version is usually under $30 which is way better than the $100+ you're paying now. Another option is Drake Tax software, which is primarily used by professionals but has a very straightforward forms-based approach. It might be overkill for an individual, but worth looking into if you're comfortable with tax forms.

Thanks for these recommendations! I hadn't heard of TaxAct Professional or TaxSlayer Pro before - are those different from their regular consumer versions? And can individual filers use the "Pro" versions, or are those restricted to accountants? Drake Tax sounds interesting too. Do you know roughly how much these options cost? Anything would be better than what I'm paying TurboTax at this point.

The Pro versions are technically designed for tax professionals, but individuals can purchase them too - they just cost more (usually $1,000+ for the software). For individual use, the regular consumer versions of TaxAct and TaxSlayer do offer a "forms view" option that lets you work directly with the forms, though it's not as comprehensive as the Pro versions. Drake Tax runs about $700 for a single-user license, which is probably not worth it unless you're doing taxes for multiple people. For just your own taxes, I'd actually suggest looking at FreeTaxUSA Premium (~$25) or TaxAct's higher-tier individual package (~$65). Both give you more control than TurboTax while costing much less.

After getting frustrated with TurboTax's clunky interface last year, I tried taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it was a completely different experience. Instead of forcing you through a rigid interview process, it lets you upload your documents and it extracts all the information automatically - no more manual entry for every little thing! What I really liked is that you can jump directly to specific forms and make changes without having to restart the whole process. I was able to customize my Schedule C deductions exactly how I wanted, and when I made a mistake, I just went directly to that form to fix it. No more navigating through 15 screens of questions!

That sounds interesting - does it handle state returns too? I'm in New York and need to file both federal and state. Also, can it handle complex situations like rental properties and multiple income sources?

I'm super skeptical of these AI tax tools. How accurate is it really? Last thing I need is to get audited because some algorithm misunderstood my tax situation.

Yes, it handles all state returns! I filed both my federal and California returns through it with no issues. The nice thing is you can review everything before submitting. For complex situations, that's actually where it shines compared to the interview-based software. I have a small business and some investment income, and it organized everything perfectly. You can directly access and modify any form rather than hunting through interview questions.

I was really skeptical about using taxr.ai when I first read about it here, but I decided to give it a shot since I was so fed up with TurboTax. Honestly, I'm shocked at how well it worked for my situation. I have a side business, some investment income, and a rental property - was worried an AI tool wouldn't handle the complexity. But it actually processed everything correctly and I could jump right to the specific forms I needed to review without going through endless interview screens. The document upload feature saved me hours of manual data entry too. When I found a mistake in how I categorized some business expenses, I could fix it directly on Schedule C instead of restarting the whole process. My refund was actually a bit higher than what TurboTax calculated last year because it found some deductions I had missed. Definitely using it again next year!

If your issue is mainly trying to reach the IRS to get answers about your filing situation, I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) last tax season and it was a lifesaver. I was in a similar situation - had forms that weren't supported by Free File and needed clarification on some filing requirements. I'd spent HOURS on hold with the IRS getting nowhere. Claimyr got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes! You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c The agent I spoke with confirmed which forms I needed and actually recommended a specific e-filing option that would work for my situation. Saved me days of research and frustration.

How does this even work? Does it just call the IRS for you? I don't understand why I would pay for something I could do myself.

Yeah right... nobody gets through to the IRS in 20 minutes. I've literally spent 3+ hours on hold multiple times this year. Either you got incredibly lucky or this is some kind of scam.

It uses an automated system to navigate the IRS phone tree and wait on hold for you. Then when an agent is about to pick up, it calls your phone and connects you. So you don't have to listen to that awful hold music for hours. I was skeptical too! I spent over 4 hours on hold with the IRS the previous week and got disconnected twice. With Claimyr, I just went about my day and got a call when an agent was ready. It's not magic - they're just using technology to handle the hold time for you.

Okay I need to eat my words from my previous comment. After being so skeptical, I tried Claimyr out of desperation yesterday. I needed to speak with someone about a specific form that wasn't supported in Free File Fillable Forms. I was connected to an IRS agent in about 30 minutes. On a Monday morning! When I'd previously wasted my entire Friday afternoon on hold. The agent confirmed that for my specific situation with those unsupported forms, I should use either TaxAct or Drake Tax with the forms-based approach others mentioned here. She even gave me specific instructions on how to e-file with those forms. Problem solved in one quick call instead of days of research. I'm still amazed this actually worked. Sorry for being such a skeptic!

Have you looked into the Credit Karma Tax platform (now called Cash App Taxes)? It's completely free for federal and state filing, even with complex returns. I switched from TurboTax to them two years ago and haven't looked back. It's not fully forms-based like you're asking for, but it gives you much more flexibility to jump between sections without forcing you through the entire interview process again. And you can't beat the price - FREE.

I've heard mixed things about Cash App Taxes - doesn't it have limitations on which forms it supports? I need to file some investment forms and I think I read somewhere that they don't support all of them. Have you used it with any complex investing situations?

You're right that it does have some limitations. It works for most common investment forms (1099-B, 1099-DIV, etc.), but doesn't support some of the more obscure forms. I have fairly standard investments and it worked fine for me. They don't support foreign income, multiple state filings, or K-1 forms for partnerships. If you need any of those, it wouldn't work for your situation. Their website has a complete list of supported forms that's worth checking against your specific needs before you invest time in entering all your data.

For California residents, don't forget about CalFile! It's the state's free e-filing system for CA state taxes. Obviously doesn't help with federal, but at least you can save money on the state portion. I combine CalFile for my state return with a cheaper option like FreeTaxUSA for federal. That way I'm only paying for one return instead of two.

CalFile is great but they have income limits and other restrictions. Worth checking if you qualify first: https://www.ftb.ca.gov/file/ways-to-file/online/calfile/qualifications.html Not everyone will be eligible unfortunately!
