I opted for the paperless delivery option when setting up my IRS account, specifically to receive tax correspondence digitally. However, I'm concerned that I never received the identity verification letter in my online account. Has anyone successfully received their verification letter electronically, or is this document exclusively sent via physical mail regardless of preferences? I want to ensure I'm not missing anything important while working remotely.

I had a similar experience on January 12th this year. Despite selecting paperless for everything, the identity verification letter still came through regular mail. From what I understand, certain security-related documents are still sent physically as of April 2024. OMG this is so annoying but totally normal! The verification letters are ALWAYS sent by mail for security reasons, even if you select paperless for everything else. The IRS wants to make sure you physically receive it at your address of record. I was super confused by this too when setting up my account!

Def normal! The IRS sends verification letters by mail only. It's their way of double-checking your address. Usually takes 5-10 biz days to arrive. If it's been longer, might wanna check if your address is correct in the system. Btw, once verified, future notices WILL show up in your online acct if you've selected paperless.
