IRS only gave partial refund for 2021 taxes - need help understanding why
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out why I only got a partial refund for my 2021 taxes. Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm planning to call the IRS to ask about offsets or adjustments, but I'm not sure what specific questions to ask. Any advice would be appreciated!

I found a way to solve partial tax refund issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARQ39acQU9I

Ugh, I've been there. The IRS can be such a pain to deal with. Have you checked your tax transcript? Sometimes it shows adjustments they made to your return.

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't looked at my transcript yet. How do I access that?

You can get it online through the IRS website. Just google 'IRS Get Transcript' and it should be the first result. You'll need to create an account if you haven't already.

Awesome, I'll check that out. Hopefully it'll give me some answers before I have to deal with their customer service š

I had a similar issue last year. Turns out they applied part of my refund to some old student loan debt I had forgotten about. Might be worth checking if you have any outstanding federal debts.

Pro tip: When you call, ask specifically about any offsets or adjustments made to your refund. Also, make sure you have all your tax docs in front of you when you call. They might ask for specific numbers or info from your return.

Good luck getting through to them lol. I've been trying for weeks and can never get past the automated system. Let us know if you actually manage to talk to a human! š¤

I found a way to get through! There's this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I'm skeptical. How do we know this isn't just some scam?

I get the skepticism, but I promise it's legit. I was desperate after trying for days and it actually worked. They don't ask for any personal info, just your phone number to forward the call.

Here's what you need to know about partial tax refunds: ā¢ The IRS can adjust your refund for various reasons, including math errors, unreported income, or outstanding debts. ā¢ Common offsets include unpaid taxes, student loans, child support, or state tax debts. ā¢ You should receive a notice explaining any changes made to your return. ā¢ If you disagree with the adjustment, you have the right to appeal. ā¢ Sometimes, the IRS splits refunds into multiple payments. Check if you're getting the rest later. When you call, ask for a detailed explanation of the adjustment and request a copy of the notice if you didn't receive one. If it's an offset, find out which agency claimed the funds. Hope this helps!

Great info! Just wanted to add that if it's a math error, you can usually get it resolved pretty quickly if you can prove the correct calculation.

Ikr? And don't even get me started on how they can take our money instantly but take forever to give refunds š

Has anyone tried using a tax advocate service? I've heard they can sometimes help with these issues.

I used one last year when I had a similar problem. They were really helpful and managed to sort everything out for me. Might be worth looking into if you can't get anywhere with the IRS directly.
