IRS keeps taking my tax refund despite payment plan - help!
Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with the IRS. They keep taking my tax refund even though I'm on a payment plan. Has anyone else dealt with this? I thought being on a payment plan was supposed to stop them from taking my refund. Any advice on how to fix this?

Ugh, that sucks! I've been there before. Have you tried calling the IRS directly? Sometimes they can sort it out if you explain the situation.

Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. You might have better luck getting through.

Or try calling on a Tuesday. For some reason, it seems to be less busy then. Good luck! 🍀

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

Yeah, it actually does! I was skeptical at first too, but I was desperate. It saved me hours of frustration.

Is it safe tho? Like, giving your phone number to a random website? 🤔

I get the concern, but it worked fine for me. They don't store your number or anything. Just connects you when an agent picks up.

This happened to me last year. Turns out there was a glitch in their system and my payment plan wasn't properly recorded. I had to send in a bunch of paperwork to prove I was on the plan. It took forever, but I eventually got my refund back.

The IRS is such a joke. They can take our money in a heartbeat, but when it comes to giving it back, suddenly everything's complicated. 🙄

Here's what you need to do: 1. Double-check that your payment plan is active and in good standing. Sometimes missed payments can void the agreement. 2. Request a transcript of your account. This will show all transactions and might help identify where the issue is. 3. If everything looks correct on your end, you'll need to file Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation) to claim your portion of the refund. 4. If that doesn't work, consider reaching out to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can often help when normal channels fail. 5. Keep detailed records of all your communications with the IRS. Dates, times, agent names, etc. 6. If all else fails, you might need to consult with a tax attorney or CPA who specializes in IRS issues. Remember, persistence is key when dealing with the IRS. Don't give up!

Have you considered setting up a direct debit for your payment plan? I've heard that can help prevent refund offsets.

I didn't know that was an option. I'll look into it, thanks!

Not sure if this helps, but I had a similar issue and it turned out my ex-spouse's debt was affecting my refund. Might be worth checking if there's any joint liability you're not aware of.

Interesting point. I'm not married, but I'll double-check if there's any other liability I might have overlooked. Thanks!

Have you tried contacting your local congressperson's office? Sometimes they can help expedite IRS issues.
