IRS flagged my return - need advice on handling call about deduction changes

So I just called the IRS and they told me my return was flagged. They gave me another number to call and said I need to tell them about the flag so they can release it. Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm not sure what to expect or how long this process takes. I made some changes to my deductions this year, could that be why? Any advice on how to handle this when I finally get through to them?

I found a way to solve IRS flagged return issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9KveaihfEs

Here's what you need to know about flagged returns: 1. Common reasons for flags: - Significant changes in income or deductions - Mismatched information (W-2s, 1099s) - Claiming certain credits (like Earned Income Tax Credit) 2. What to do: - Gather ALL documentation related to your return - Be prepared to explain any changes or unusual items - Stay calm and be patient (easier said than done, I know) 3. Timeline: - Can take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months - Depends on the complexity of your case and IRS workload 4. Tips: - Keep detailed notes of all conversations with IRS agents - Follow up regularly, but not excessively - Consider getting professional help if it's complicated Remember, getting flagged doesn't necessarily mean you did anything wrong. Sometimes it's just random checks. Hang in there!

Great advice! I'd add: if you can afford it, consider hiring a tax professional. They can often resolve issues faster.

I actually tried Claimyr because I was tired of waiting for hours, and it worked. But it's true, it's a bit frustrating that we have to shell out extra money just to get through. If you're in a rush, it's a good option; otherwise, patience and persistence are key. The system is far from perfect but be prepared to explain your deductions, especially since you mentioned changing them. Keep calm and document everything.

Have you checked your transcript on the IRS website? Sometimes it gives more info about why your return was flagged. Might save you some time on the phone.

Hang in there, OP! We're all in the same leaky tax boat. Just keep bailing and eventually you'll reach the shore. Or sink. But let's hope for the shore! ๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™‚๏ธ

For real. In some countries, the govt just sends you a bill. Why can't we have that?

Ugh, been there done that. It's a total nightmare trying to get through to the IRS. I spent HOURS on hold last year for a similar issue. My advice? Have all your docs ready and be prepared to explain every little change you made. Good luck, you're gonna need it ๐Ÿ€

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting for hours. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imho.

OP, what specific deductions did you change? I work in tax prep and might be able to give you some insight.

I added some home office deductions and a few new charitable contributions. Nothing major, I thought.

Ah, home office deductions can be a red flag, especially if it's your first time claiming them. Make sure you have solid documentation. As for charitable contributions, anything over $250 needs a written acknowledgment from the organization. Hope this helps!

Pro tip: call early in the morning, like right when they open. You'll have a better chance of getting through without waiting for hours. Also, be super nice to the agent, even if you're frustrated. They deal with angry people all day and being kind can go a long way.

Same boat here. My return got flagged because I claimed a home office deduction for the first time. Took forever to sort out. Make sure you have receipts for everything!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll dig out all my receipts. How long did it take you to get it resolved?

It took about 2 months from start to finish. But I hear it can vary a lot. Just keep calling and don't give up!
