Need to verify tax return with IRS - What to expect and how to prepare?

Hey everyone, I need to verify my tax return with the IRS. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What should I expect when I call them? Any tips or things I should have ready before I make the call? I'm a bit nervous about it and want to make sure I'm prepared.

I just went through this last month. Make sure you have all your documents ready - W2s, 1099s, any receipts for deductions, etc. They'll probably ask for your Social Security number and maybe some security questions to verify your identity. Good luck!

This is good advice. Also, don't forget to have a copy of your tax return handy. They might ask specific questions about what you filed.

Thanks for the tips! I'll make sure to gather everything before I call. Did they ask you anything unexpected?

Not really, but they did ask about some specific deductions I claimed. So maybe review those if you itemized.

Ugh, good luck getting through to anyone. I've been trying for weeks and keep getting the 'due to high call volume' message. It's so frustrating! šŸ˜¤

I feel you. The IRS is seriously understaffed. I heard they're hiring like crazy, but it's still a mess.

Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. That's how I finally got through after trying for days.

I found a way to get someone on the phone fast. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

I get the skepticism, but it's not a scam. It's just a service that waits on hold for you. Saved me hours of frustration.

Here's a comprehensive guide for verifying your tax return with the IRS: ā€¢ Have your tax return and all supporting documents ready ā€¢ Prepare your Social Security number and date of birth ā€¢ Know your filing status and the exact amount you reported on your return ā€¢ Be ready to answer security questions about past returns ā€¢ If you received any letters from the IRS, have those on hand ā€¢ Take notes during the call ā€¢ Be patient and polite - the agents are usually trying their best to help Remember, the IRS will NEVER ask for payment over the phone or threaten you with arrest. If that happens, it's a scam.

Great advice! I'd add: if you're married and filed jointly, both spouses should be available for the call if possible.

It's not just you. The whole process is a nightmare. We need serious tax reform in this country.

Quick question - does anyone know if theres a time limit for how long after filing you can still verify your return? I filed months ago and just got a letter asking for verification.

Pro tip: if you can't get through on the main IRS line, try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help with verification issues and the wait times are usually shorter.
