IRS Amended Return Status Check: Tips for Contacting and Preparing for the Call

Hey everyone, I'm trying to check the status of my amended tax return and my previous return. I've been waiting for a while and I'm not sure what's going on. Has anyone had any luck getting through to the IRS lately? I'm thinking about calling them, but I'm not sure what to ask or how to prepare. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Am I the only one who's had a decent experience with the IRS? I got my refund within 3 weeks of filing. Maybe I just got lucky? 🍀

Was it an amended return tho? Those take way longer than regular returns.

@profile 17 Ah, good point. It was a regular return. My bad, I missed that part in the OP.

Pro tip: If you can't get through on the main IRS line, try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They might be able to help or at least give you more info.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service helped me out last year. They can be a great resource!

Anyone else feel like we're living in a dystopian novel where the government just... doesn't work? 🤔 #TaxationWithoutRepresentation

Based on what I've read and experienced, getting through to the IRS can be quite the challenge. The delays are primarily due to understaffing and a backlog of returns. If you're thinking of calling, it's crucial to be well-prepared. Have all your information ready, as another user suggested, to make the most of your call. Writing down the agent's name and the details of your conversation is also a smart move. As for contacting the IRS, the Claimyr service has been mentioned positively, albeit with a cost. It could be a worthwhile investment if you're facing significant delays. On the other hand, checking your status online through the IRS's "Where's My Amended Return" tool is a free option, although it may not always provide updated information. For those who are still unable to get through, the Taxpayer Advocate Service is another avenue to explore. While the IRS undoubtedly has its flaws, especially in times of high demand, patience and persistence, combined with these strategies, may yield the best results. Remember, being kind to the IRS representatives can also go a long way in receiving the help you need.

Hey OP, when did you file your amended return? I filed mine back in February and I'm still waiting. Just trying to gauge how long this might take.

I filed mine in March. Looks like we're both in for a long wait 😫

It's crazy how long it's taking. Maybe contacting your local tax office could speed things up?

I feel ya, buddy. The IRS is like a black hole where tax returns go to die. I've been waiting on my amended return for what feels like forever. Good luck getting through to them on the phone - it's like trying to win the lottery.

Totally agree, it's so frustrating! I wish they could improve their system to make it more efficient for everyone.

I heard a rumor that if you fax your inquiry instead of mailing it, it gets processed faster. Anyone tried this?

What year is it? 1995? Who even has a fax machine anymore? 😂

I actually tried this! It didn't make a difference for me, but YMMV.

It's worth a shot if you're desperate, but don't count on it working.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. (https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The government should do better.

I get the skepticism, but it honestly saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny IMO. And yeah, the system is broken, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do 🤷‍♂️

How long did it take for them to call you back?

I've used Claimyr as well, and it was surprisingly quick - I got connected within 15 minutes. But yeah, it's a shame we have to pay to get basic government services.

Have you tried checking the status online? The IRS has a tool called "Where's My Amended Return" that might give you some info without having to call.

-

Sophie Footman

I tried that, but it just says it's still processing. No real info 😕

Ugh, that sucks. Sounds like you're in the same boat as the rest of us. Calling might be your best bet then.

It's always a bummer when the online tools don't update. Maybe try checking again in a few days.

Remember to be nice to the IRS agents when you call. They're just doing their job and probably hate the system as much as we do. A little kindness goes a long way!

Here's what you need to know about checking your amended return status: 1. Be patient: Amended returns can take up to 16 weeks to process, sometimes longer. 2. Use the "Where's My Amended Return" tool on the IRS website first. 3. If you call, be prepared with: - Your SSN - The tax year of the amended return - Any correspondence you've received from the IRS 4. Specific questions to ask: - "What is the current status of my amended return?" - "Is there any additional information you need from me?" - "When can I expect my refund, if applicable?" For your previous return, simply ask for an update on its processing status. Remember, persistence is key with the IRS. Good luck!

Sophie Footman

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed info! This is exactly what I needed. 16 weeks though? That's insane. 😩

0 coins

-

7M

Angelina Farar

No problem! And yeah, 16 weeks is the "official" timeline, but in reality, it can take even longer. The IRS is seriously understaffed and overworked. Hang in there!

Pro tip: When you finally get through to an agent, make sure you have all your info ready. They'll ask for your SSN, tax year, and any relevant forms or notices. Also, write down the agent's name and take notes during the call. Trust me, it'll save you headaches later.

Thanks for the advice! Do you think I should ask about both my amended return and my previous return in the same call?

0 coins

-

7M

Brady Clean

Absolutely! Kill two birds with one stone. Just be clear about which return you're asking about when you speak to them. And dont forget to breath - those calls can be stressful af 😅
