IRS Verification Letter: How to Respond and What to Expect

Has anyone else gotten a letter from the IRS asking for verification? I just got one and I'm not sure what to do. It's stressing me out because I don't want to mess anything up. I've been trying to call them all day but I can't get through. Any advice on how to handle this or what to expect?

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/xfh878MYSFY

Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The government should make it easier to contact them without having to pay extra.

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Sometimes you gotta spend money to save time 🤷‍♂️

It's all about control, man. They don't want us to have easy access. Wake up sheeple! 👀

Chill, it's not a conspiracy. They're just underfunded and understaffed.

It's more likely due to bureaucracy and inefficiencies.

I got one of those letters last year. Don't panic! It's usually just a routine check. Make sure you have all your tax documents ready and call them back. Be prepared to wait on hold for a while tho 😫

Good advice! The waiting can be frustrating but it's important to get it sorted out.

Have you tried reaching out to your local taxpayer advocate? They can sometimes help navigate these issues and its a free service.

Pro tip: try calling right when they open in the morning. Sometimes you can get through faster that way.

As someone who went through this, it's best to stay calm and organized. Make copies of everything and be thorough in your response. If you can't get through by phone, definitely consider mailing a response or consulting with a tax professional. They've been through this process many times and can offer tailored advice. And regarding tools like Claimyr, while they are beneficial for some, always weigh the cost against your needs. It's essential to have all options considered. Good luck!

Here's what you need to know about IRS verification letters: 1. Don't ignore it! Respond within the timeframe they give you. 2. Gather all relevant documents (W-2s, 1099s, receipts for deductions, etc.) 3. If you can't get through by phone, you can also respond by mail. Make sure to send copies, not originals. 4. Consider getting help from a tax professional if you're unsure about anything. 5. If you need more time, you can request an extension. Remember, most of these verifications are routine. As long as you provided accurate info on your return, you should be fine. Good luck!

Great advice! I'd add: keep a record of all your communications with the IRS, including dates and names of who you spoke to.

It's also worth noting to check for any possible scams when you get such letters.
