IRS Address Change Issue - Agent Hung Up on Me?
So I changed my address because I moved; but I forgot to put my new apt number. So I have the new street address but the old apt #. So I called the IRS to see if it'll be an issue in case they need to mail me a letter because that apt # doesn't exist in my new neighborhood. Somebody used my social years ago so occasionally they'll send a letter and ask me to verify if it's me who filed using my info. . So the guy asks my address, and I say I put the wrong apt number just wanted to see what I'd need to do to update. So he's asking me questions to verify, my social, and employer. He asked me for a number off my return, so I say which line so I can give u the correct one. He says line 1. I give him the number and he says "yeah doesn't match you'll have to call us back". so I call right back and they're closed 😒😒😒😒😒 I'm convinced he did that on purpose. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

That's frustrating, but not surprising unfortunately. Line 1 on Form 1040 is your wages/salary - a basic verification question. If that didn't match, it could be that you're looking at the wrong form, wrong year, or there's some other discrepancy. The IRS has strict verification protocols to protect against identity theft (especially since you mentioned previous issues with that).

I had almost the exact same thing happen. Agent asked for AGI from line 11 but I was looking at my state return by mistake. Got disconnected and had to wait 3 more days to get through. For address changes, you can also file Form 8822 (Change of Address form) if you can't get through by phone. Mail it to the address on the form based on your state.

Last time I needed to update my address, I spent 4 hours on hold with the IRS before giving up. Then I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They keep calling for you and alert you when an agent picks up. Saved me from wasting another day on hold. The agent was able to update my address right away and confirm my identity.

PSA: If you're ever dealing with address issues or identity verification, make sure you have ALL your documents ready before calling: - Current tax return - Previous year's return - Photo ID - Any IRS notices you've received - Social security card They can ask for verification from any of these, and it's brutal when you have to call back.

You mentioned someone used your SSN years ago. If you're still getting verification letters, you should consider adding an Identity Protection PIN to your account. You can get one through the IRS website, and it prevents anyone from filing with your SSN without the PIN.

I had a similar issue with my apartment number. I used taxr.ai to analyze my tax transcript and noticed my address was incorrect there too. The tool flagged it as a potential issue since the IRS sometimes mails notices instead of using the online portal. It was super helpful seeing everything laid out clearly instead of trying to decipher the transcript myself.

Does that actually work? I've been trying to figure out what all the codes on my transcript mean.

Yeah, it breaks down all those weird codes and explains what they mean specifically for your situation. I was getting those 570/971 codes and freaking out until I understood what was happening.

Pro tip: Try calling right when they open at 7am Eastern. I've had much better luck getting through then. Also, for address changes specifically, sometimes the automated system can handle it without needing to talk to a representative.
