IRS 2022 Tax Refund Delay: No Communication, What to Do?
Has anyone else not received their 2022 tax refund yet? I filed last year and still haven't gotten anything. I haven't received any letters or notices from the IRS either. It's been months and I'm starting to get worried. Anyone else in the same boat or know what I should do next?

Okay, listen up folks. I've been through this rodeo before and here's what you need to know: 1. Don't panic. The IRS is seriously backlogged, especially with 2022 returns. 2. Check the "Where's My Refund" tool, but don't rely on it entirely. 3. If it's been more than 21 days since you e-filed (or 6 weeks for paper returns), you can try calling the IRS. 4. Be prepared for long wait times when calling. Early morning or late evening might have shorter queues. 5. If you can't get through, try contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help with delayed refunds. 6. Make sure there weren't any errors on your return. Simple mistakes can cause major delays. 7. If you claimed certain credits (like the Earned Income Tax Credit), your refund might be delayed for additional review. Remember, persistence is key. Don't give up, but also be patient. The IRS is dealing with millions of returns.

This is really helpful, thanks! Do you know how long it usually takes for them to process returns with EITC?

For EITC, it can take up to 6-8 weeks from the time they start processing. But with current backlogs, it might be longer. Hang in there!

Great advice! I’d add that keeping track of any actions you take can also help if you need to escalate the matter later.

Lol I'd join. We could have weekly meetings where we just refresh the "Where's My Refund" page together

A support group might actually help relieve some stress and share useful tips. Perhaps a virtual meet-up?

I'm an accountant and here's a tip: make sure you're keeping all your tax documents organized. If the IRS does come back with questions, having everything ready can speed up the process.

What's the best way to organize everything? I always feel overwhelmed with all the paperwork.

I recommend using a simple folder system, either physical or digital. Categorize by income, expenses, investments, etc. And always keep copies of your filed returns!

I’ve found digital organization tools like apps or cloud storage very useful, especially in avoiding paper clutter.

Have you checked the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website? Sometimes it has updates even if you haven't received a letter.

Yeah, I've been checking that tool almost daily. It just says "Your tax return is still being processed." 😩

That tool is useless. It's been saying the same thing for me for months!

I’ve had mixed experiences with the tool. Sometimes it updates overnight, but other times it doesn’t change for weeks. Keep checking, though!

Update: I finally got through to someone at the IRS using that Claimyr thing. They said there was a "processing error" on my return and they're working on fixing it. At least I know what's going on now. Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

Same here! Filed in February 2022 and still nothing. This is ridiculous. The IRS needs to get their act together.

Pro tip: If you're expecting a big refund, adjust your withholdings so you get more money throughout the year instead of waiting for a refund. That way you're not at the mercy of the IRS's slow processing times.

If you're dealing with a delayed tax refund, it can be incredibly frustrating, especially when it feels like you're in a communication void with the IRS. Here are some steps you might consider: First, continue to use the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website for any status updates. Although it might seem stagnant, it can eventually provide the breakthrough update you need. When calling the IRS, patience is crucial. Consider using third-party tools like Claimyr, which can facilitate getting through phone lines, though remember it does come with a cost. If you find that the delay is becoming unmanageable, you can reach out to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They are there to assist with long-standing issues. Additionally, contacting your local congressman or the TIGTA might be worth considering, especially if you suspect systemic issues or errors. It's vital to keep thorough records of all correspondence and attempts to contact the IRS, as this documentation can be helpful if the issue escalates. Lastly, while waiting for your refund, reviewing your tax filing strategy, such as adjusting withholdings, could prevent similar situations in the future. Remember, you're not alone in this, and persistence combined with patience is essential.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

$20 just to talk to someone? Sounds like a scam to me.
